Samsung has officially shown a new type of OLED panel that can solve the biggest visual issue in foldable phones. The new display was the star of the International Meeting on Information Display 2026 expo, taking place at BEXCO in Busan, South Korea, and could make the next Galaxy Z Fold 9 series irresistable.

As the name suggests, the new OLED panel offers wider viewing angles, which can lead to additional benefits, compared to conventional OLED displays.
The Wide View Display is the latest wide viewing angle technology capable of resolving the issue of side brightness degradation in the folding parts of foldable smartphones or the curved edges of edge displays. Applying this technology allows for the realization of uniform image quality without brightness differences based on viewing angle in next-generation form factor products such as foldable, slidable, and rollable displays

This new technology could not only result in TV and laptop screens that can be viewed from a very steep angle but also solve one of foldable phones' biggest problems. The crease.

Foldable displays are great and all, but the dreaded crease breaks the magic. Samsung has reportedly solved one of the biggest issues, tied with flexible screens — brightness degradation at the crease.
By applying this technology, next-generation form factor products such as foldable, sliding double, and rollable can achieve uniform image quality without brightness differences depending on viewing angle.
- Samsung official blog, August 19, 2026
According to Samsung, current foldable OLED screens offer just 40% brightness at the crease, compared to the flat part of the display. The new display fixes this by "a complete redesign of the material and structure of the new organic light-emitting layer."
By offering a uniform brightness level between the crease and the other parts of the foldable panel, Samsung says the curve at the fold will be much less noticeable, especially when displaying bright content.

Samsung showed a 7.6-inch prototype OLED panel at the expo (pictured above), and you can see the difference next to a conventional screen.
Many companies have tried to hide the crease, including Honor and Huawei, but this new development could add a necessary ingredient to the mix.
Samsung speaks about applying the tech in next-generation products, and the first thing that comes to mind is the Galaxy Z Fold 9. I know we just got the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but I just can't help being excited about the next one.

In the press release, Samsung also mentions new form factor devices, such as sliding double screen devices and rollables.
I've been a huge fan of the rollable form factor ever since Oppo and LG showed their prototypes back in 2021. However, the development of the technology kind of froze in time, as big companies decided to pursue foldable designs.
This new OLED panel could bring back the rollable dream and give us a new smartphone form factor.
