Motorola's first new Moto G-series mid-ranger in quite some time looks like a battery champ

The 7,000mAh battery-packing Moto G47 Power 5G is not official yet, but its formal announcement and commercial release are likely right around the corner.

How can you tell that the budget-friendly segment of the global smartphone market is in trouble as the direct consequence of continuously rising component costs and product prices over the last year or so?

A clear indication is the activity of brands like Motorola, which used to unveil a new affordable Android handset practically every few weeks or so until fairly recently. That's no longer possible for pretty obvious reasons, but a big-battery version of the Moto G47 released across select countries in Europe and Asia back in May is definitely coming soon, as suggested by Sudhanshu Ambhore's unusually comprehensive X leak.

This is a very familiar spec sheet

  • 6.67-inch LCD screen with 1604 x 720 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate technology;
  • MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor;
  • 128GB internal storage space;
  • 4GB RAM;
  • Android 16;
  • 108MP primary rear-facing camera;
  • 2MP secondary macro lens;
  • 8MP front-facing camera;
  • 7,000mAh battery;
  • 30W charging support;
  • IP64 water and dust resistance;
  • 166 x 77 x 9mm dimensions.

Wait, so what exactly is new here?

That's actually a really easy question to answer, at least at first glance. The battery capacity is bumped from 5,200mAh on the "regular" Moto G47 all the way up to 7,000mAh for this presumably fast-approaching Moto G47 Power model, and the top charging speed is improved from 20 to 30 watts.

Naturally, the G47 Power is also set to add 1.1mm to its "cousin's" 7.9mm profile, and although it's not mentioned today, the overall product weight is likely to jump from 191 grams to more than 200 as well. If I were to guess an exact number, I'd probably go with around 208 grams, as the 6.72-inch Moto G Max, for instance, tips the scales at 213 grams with a hefty 7,000mAh cell of its own.

Compared to the likes of the G Max, the G47 Power 5G is expected to sport a display with humbler resolution (but the same silky smooth refresh rate support) and pack a slightly slower MediaTek chipset. The Dimensity 6300, of course, is the exact same processor found inside the non-Power-branded Moto G47, and disappointingly, the pre-loaded Android version is likely to also go unchanged.

What don't we know just yet?

For one thing, the official marketing names of the two colorways revealed today are not currently etched in stone. Knowing Motorola, they'll probably get fancy Pantone monikers, although the elegance of the turquoise green hue is far more important than its branding.

Can Motorola keep its mid-range phones afloat?

Clearly, the Moto G47 Power 5G aims to turn heads and keep the lights on for (at least) a good couple of days between charges, purportedly costing around €270 in a single configuration with 128 gigs of local digital hoarding room and 4GB memory. That's obviously for the old continent, and while I could easily convert that tag in US dollars, stateside availability is very clearly out of the question for this impending addition to the global Moto G family.

It also remains unclear exactly where in Europe the handset will be released and when, but if you've ever seen the "normal" Moto G47 in a store near you, you can probably hope to get the opportunity to purchase its Power sibling soon as well.

Should you wait for the Moto G47 Power?

If you're on a tight budget, care more about your phone's battery life than its raw speed or screen resolution, and think you can live with a 9mm thick brick weighing more than 200 grams, then absolutely.

After all, something like Samsung's Galaxy A17 5G is currently costlier than €270 in many European markets with a comparatively modest 5,000mAh cell under the hood, not to mention an ugly notched design. Of course, brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi also have a strong presence on the old continent (especially in the mid-range sector), but it's still not easy to find a 7,000mAh or so battery-packing device with an eye-catching design at the G47 Power's expected price point (or less).
