Microsoft deems Apple's iPads kiddie tablets in hilarious new Surface Go ad (Video)

Microsoft has pretty much been targeting Apple in its Surface commercials since the very birth of the popular Windows-powered product lineup, repeatedly billing Cortana as smarter and more useful than Siri, and attempting to dismantle the iPad Pro’s computer replacement ambitions in various clever ways.

But the latest iPad-bashing Microsoft ad might be the most brazen (and shamelessly hilarious) of all, basically calling Apple’s tablets glorified toys only witless kids could ever find a use for.

The holiday-themed 30-second video sees a 10-year-old girl singing a surprisingly well-arranged “remix” of the classic Elmo & Patsy Christmas song “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”, which itself is incredibly funny, especially if you already feel inundated by the same old cheesy carols.

Microsoft’s reimagining of the comical Randy Brooks-written lyrics include the little girl’s pleas for a Surface Go over an iPad, which may have been fine when the commercial’s charismatic star was six, but now she’s ten. And now she wants a “real computer” (oh snap) to help fulfill her “big dreams”, including doing “some coding.”

It’s fairly obvious the girl’s grandma (who was probably not run over by a reindeer) is convinced by the end of the musical request to indeed skip buying an iPad in favor of Microsoft’s smallest and cheapest Surface model.

As always, it’s unclear how many people out in the real world will see the ad and actually reconsider their purchase or general choice of portable computing software platform. But if you just want a good chuckle without thinking too much about the differences between Surface devices and iPads, Microsoft certainly delivers at that level.

That’s funny considering only someone the age of her grandma would even know what Windows is these days. Microsoft is trying hard to stay relevenat, but what can you do with that “grown up” PC anyways considering all the good apps are written for Android and iOS ?

Microsoft is sometimes the first and sometimes the second most valuable company in the world. Hardly irrelevant :) And by all good apps you mean games and apps for teenagers to waste their time with, right ? Because no one who actually works uses iOS or Android to do his or hers job.

Are you serious? Aside from mobile phones used for business email and calling, we have a lot of Sales account managers who use the iPad for work.

Lmao, I’ve seen many executives which are probably richer and smarter than you and also designers using iPads to do or complement their jobs. Keep dreaming

You can do anything on iOS and Android. What can you do on Windows these days, run Office ? The world runs on mobile devices, give it up. The desktop is still relevant for business but at home everyone has a tablet. Microsoft is trying hard to stay relevant by playing nice with Apple and Google, but there days are numbered. Only over priced licensing keeping the money flowing in, but business are moving on...

Everyone has a tablet at home? Most of my family and friends have a laptop at home. My dad also has a Windows tablet since Garmin Mapsource doesn't have an iOS/Android counterpart. Most of the times I use my laptop at home, despite having an iOS/Android tablet. Windows consumer laptops are still sold in the millions. Windows desktops are sold in the millions to gamers and graphic designers. Try running Pro/Engineer or Maya on an iOS/Android device. So no.. you can't do anything on iOS/Android, not by a long shot. And businesses are not moving on at all. But Microsoft has a lot of businesses outside just Windows you seem to be oblivious about.

Try running full AutoCAD on iOS or Android. Better yet, try running Revit. The bell rang, recess is over so you better hurry back to class for show and tell.

Almost this whole world runs on Windows, and fruit company is not a part of it!

Children, like you, use apps. Grown-ups, who run the world, use programs. See the difference or should I draw you a picture? I'm guessing you're not smart enough to get the gist of the ad so I've broken it down for you. Sorry for the spoiler alert.

dude are you actually being serious? you really believe mobile apps are more productive than full blown pc suite software? lol you are really blinded.

Those mobile apps are designed to use with touchscreen so yes i would use them because the workflow is lot better. Sure if you want to use mouse and keyboard and all that then it's a different thing, but then why you even buy surface, why don't just buy great laptop to run those real softwares.

so if im using my laptop and you, your phone, im pretty sure any task that needs to be done would and will be done more efficiently and of better quality on a PC, plus what device do you think those apps are made on?

I mean sure a PC is more capable than a Phone/tablet. However some tasks are easier performed on a mobile device than a desktop and vice versa. They can co-exist

Guess you haven't got a job yet, otherwise, you would know how relevant Microsoft actually is. And there are many things (especially on the work floor) that you can not do with an app.

And how where those apps written/created? On an iPad? Nope.

Literally just about every company out there has Windows devices in their environment. Don't think they have to try hard to stay relevant.

I just bought intel i9 PC and i can say this is the first time when i like to use my PC again, it works as fast as my iPad. Zero waiting doing tasks just like with my iPad. Best part with iPad is the amazing smooth performance which makes it so great to use.

Stop trying, everyone knows that you are the biggest iFan around! Everyone knows that Windows OS is more powerful than fruit OS! Comparing a full options OS with a kiddy closed OS, the joke is on you!

The fruit company has an os for desktop that is widely used in the film industry and also in the music industry, very profitable industries, also architects use MacOS, Microsoft survives only due to office, even big companies which use windows are using very old versions of windows, not even Microsoft’s efforts to force companies to upgrade their windows version work, lmao, the joke is on you and MS, now go back to your sewer

lol my pc runs at 240hz, 64gb of ram, 8tb of storage and twin gtx 1080ti, your ipad is nothing but a childs toy compared to a real Enthusiast Desktop.

Yes, I understand, actually is very comfortable to bring your desktop pc with your 4k monitor everywhere so you can use all that power wherever you want, like a Starbucks, a library, I can see you taking your whole pc on the train while going to a different city and playing Assassin’s creed odyssey on the go, very practical in comparison to an iPad
