The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is outselling Samsung's record-breaking Fold 7 by a wide margin

Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are selling 30% ahead of the record-setting Galaxy Z Fold 7 in the US, Samsung says, a month in. The company also walked through how it got the wide Fold 8 down to 201 grams, lighter than an iPhone 17 Pro Max and the lightest foldable phone on the market.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales are running 30% ahead of the Fold 7

Today, Samsung shared the figures through its US newsroom, stating that combined Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra purchases in the US are running 30% ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, a lead that was already visible when the pre-order figures first came in. Consequently, the two Folds now make up roughly 80% of all Galaxy Z series purchases.

Still, Samsung says 30% of Galaxy Z Flip 8 buyers switched over from a competing brand, and most of them had never owned a foldable before.

Weight kept foldable shoppers walking away

For anyone who has picked up a foldable in a store and quietly put it back down, this is the part that matters. Bulk was never a spec-sheet complaint, it was the reason the category felt like a compromise, and Samsung leaned on a 2024 YouGov survey to make exactly that case.



Among people who said they were not planning to buy a foldable, a bulky or heavy design was one of the main reasons they gave. Among those who were considering one, battery life, durability and display quality ranked as the top priorities, so the target was narrow: shed weight without touching any of the three things buyers said they cared about most.

Google's position looks awkward next to that. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold weighs 258 grams, 57 more than the Fold 8, and in our review we scored it 6.8 and called it one of the laziest updates Google has released recently, with battery life that barely moved from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

If you already own one, none of this makes your phone worse, though it does mean the gap you feel in your pocket is real rather than imagined. And if you have been holding out for Apple's first foldable, which is expected tomorrow, 201 grams is the number to judge it against.

How Samsung cut 52 grams off the Galaxy Z Fold

The original Galaxy Fold weighed 276 grams back in 2019, and Samsung has taken weight out of almost every generation since. The Fold 8 is 201.



Getting there meant machining the metal plate under the display to around 0.2mm, using a Titanium Alloy Film roughly a third the width of a human hair, and auditing about 270 components, where some savings were measured at 0.001 grams.

If you are shopping, the Fold 8 is the one to hold if weight is your sticking point, and the Fold 8 Ultra is the one to buy if you want the telephoto and the bigger battery and can live with 14 extra grams.

I'd personally love to see Google answer it with a Pixel Fold that finally feels light enough to forget about in a pocket.
