With only a couple of days before the pre-orders for the foldable iPhone finally open, you can already prepare yourself for what is expected to be a challenging process. While contemplating more pleasant details like the color and storage options you want for your device, you may need to really consider the potential repairs, as they come at some hefty prices.
iPhone Duo repairs reach $1,499, unless you have coverage
Apple finally published all the estimated service and repair fees for the iPhone Duo, and the prices are not pretty at all, especially if you decide to skip buying AppleCare+ coverage. The maximum price you may need to pay for “other accidental damage” reaches an eye-watering $1,499.
Fortunately, partial damage comes with more bearable prices, but they’re still far from affordable, especially with the iPhone Duo's price starting at an already considerable $1,999. The cheapest repair is for the matte cover layer, which Apple already confirmed will easily peel off, and it’ll cost $19 with AppleCare+ coverage. Changing it without the coverage is way more expensive, but it’s still a manageable $49.
Here are the rest of the estimated service costs for the iPhone Duo without AppleCare+ coverage:
Back glass damage: $199
Battery service: $229
Rear camera damage: $229
Outer display damage: $379
Outer display and back glass damage: $509
Inner display damage: $999
Other damage: $1,499

AppleCare+ may be really worth it for the iPhone Duo

We’ve already seen the repair prices for the iPhone Duo with Apple Care+, and they’re much more bearable. Here is the full list of estimated service costs for the iPhone Duo with AppleCare+ coverage:
Battery service: $0
Cover layer damage: $19
Back glass damage: $29
Outer display damage: $29
Inner display damage: $99
Other accidental damage: $99
Theft or loss: $149
AppleCare+ is far from cheap either, with prices for the iPhone Duo starting at $19.99 per month and reaching $199.99 when you choose an annual subscription and $399 for a fixed two-year plan. Even at these prices, the repair costs are so high that a simple battery replacement could make the annual subscription worth it.
When the service costs for the iPhone Duo with AppleCare+ were revealed last month, users online were surprised about the low prices. Many users on Reddit said paying for the coverage is a no-brainer, especially for clumsier people and anyone who’d want to use their shiny, new foldable without a case.

How much do iPhone Duo repairs cost compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Comparing the repair costs of the iPhone Duo with Samsung’s foldables raises questions about Apple’s prices. Even the bigger, more expensive, and decidedly more advanced Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra costs much less to repair than the foldable iPhone without coverage.
Samsung charges $639 to replace the inner display of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, while display repairs will cost $479 for the internal screen, and $149 for the external display. All these prices are much lower than Apple’s fees, with repairs being more than 50% cheaper.
The difference is even bigger for the repairs of the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 8. Replacing its internal display is listed at $579 on Samsung’s website, while repairing the same internal screen is $419. To fix a damaged outer display, Samsung will charge $139. The company hasn’t listed the prices of any other repairs, nor the costs for Galaxy Z Fold 8 owners who have Samsung Care+ coverage.
Making coverage feel mandatory
Even though I don’t consider myself extremely clumsy, I’ve broken my fair share of displays and back covers over the years, mostly with some unfortunate drops. That’s why I opt to use cases, which may not be as efficient with a foldable. These considerations and Apple’s prices make it feel mandatory to buy coverage, which only makes the Duo more expensive.
