Don’t give up on the Galaxy Z Flip series just yet, Samsung!

Dear Samsung, please don't let the Galaxy Z Flip 8 be the last of its kind.

Some time back, awful news emerged about the Galaxy Z Flip 8. Apparently, the Flip 8 might be the last Flip phone that Samsung ever makes.

Sounds impossible to believe, doesn’t it? After all, the Z Flip series has accompanied the Z Fold series for most of the latter’s existence. To get a Galaxy Z Fold 9 next year without a Galaxy Z Flip 9 would feel so very wrong.

And yet, the writing is on the wall, and I wish it wasn’t.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the last? Says who?

According to reports from within the supply chain, there have been no plans for a Galaxy Z Flip 9 that have been sent over from Samsung. Usually, when the current year’s Flip model has been finalized and is in mass production — which the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is — designs for its successor are already in the hands of suppliers.

Most sources are left speculating whether Samsung has decided to discontinue the Z Flip series. One report alleged that Samsung believes that it has perfected the clamshell foldable phone with the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and that the company does not see any reason to continue making more Z Flip models.

I think that would be a terrible move

Discontinuing the Galaxy Z Flip series would, in my opinion, be a terrible move on Samsung’s part. There are a couple of reasons why I think that, so let’s tackle them one after the other.

For starters, just because a phone series cannot be improved upon any further does not mean that there will never be any buyers. People who love the Galaxy Z Flip phones will want to buy the newest model if their current Flip phone is starting to feel old.

Perhaps Samsung could have reduced the number of units that it manufactures each year, as people who buy a new model every generation for the latest features might not stick around. But I honestly believe that the Flip series would have always retained a dedicated fan base. Even if it’s just minor changes each release, like how the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is slimmer and lighter.

Now, on to the second reason.

The Galaxy Z Flip series has a long way to go

I vehemently disagree with Samsung’s alleged belief that the Z Flip series cannot be improved upon any further. But just saying that is simple enough, so I will back it up with a few ways that the Z Flip phones can be made better yet.

First, the display. The crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has been improved greatly over the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which already had a stellar display. This same almost-invisible crease will also likely be found on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

But there’s my problem with it, it’s “almost-invisible”, not completely invisible. That alone is something that Samsung can keep itself occupied with for a few more generations until it is able to manufacture the most perfect foldable smartphone display that the world has ever seen.

Other than that, at least the front camera on the internal larger display can be replaced with an under-display camera that takes photos just as well and is completely hidden. Such a camera is probably still generations away, so that’s another thing that Samsung can busy itself with for a few years.

The bezels on the internal display are also very prominent, especially compared to the gorgeous external screen and its super-thin borders. That is yet another improvement that can be worked on for the Galaxy Z Flip 9 and beyond.

Another area that desperately needs improvement is the battery. Samsung is still stubbornly clinging on to a maximum cap of 5,000 mAh — even the Fold 8 Ultra will have this battery capacity — and the Flip 7 only has a battery capacity of 4,300 mAh.

And until Samsung’s phones start shipping with silicon-carbon batteries, they’re not even close to being as good as they could. So yeah, Samsung, don’t give up on the Galaxy Z Flip series just yet.

Doing so will just send potential customers to other phone manufacturers instead, perhaps never to return again. Think on it.
