The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is super slim and even lighter than the Flip 7

Samsung's last Galaxy Flip phone might be ready to go out with a bang.

Samsung has been hard at work perfecting what might be the last Galaxy Flip ever. When compared with the Galaxy Z Flip 7, the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 8 will reportedly be even slimmer and lighter.

How slim and heavy is the Galaxy Z Flip 8?

According to a new leak from a very reliable source, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 will weigh 180 grams. In addition, the phone will be 6.1 mm thick when unfolded.

The thickness does not include the rubber bump bezels of the screen, which will take the phone up to around 6.6 mm.

If this really is the last Galaxy Flip, will you get one?

How does it compare to the Galaxy Z Flip 7?

For comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is around 6.6 mm when unfolded and weighs 188 grams. So, according to the report, the Flip 8 is noticeably slimmer and marginally lighter than its predecessor.

However, there’s a bit of extra context for this leak that needs explaining.

Do these measurements mean anything?

According to a response from another very reliable source to this leak, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 only measures 6.1 mm when the rubber bump bezels of its screen are not included. These bumps are protective rubber feet along the bezels of the display. They absorb the impact of folding the phone and protect the screen from getting damaged.

As mentioned before, including these rubber bump bezels in the measurement takes the phone up to around 6.6 mm, which is the same thickness as the Galaxy Z Flip 7. However, if you measure the Flip 7 with these bezels included, the result comes out to around 6.9 mm according to some tests.

So the in-hand feel of the phone is apparently going to be of a phone that is around 6.6 mm, a marginal but mostly unnoticeable improvement over 6.9 mm. In addition, the drop from 188 grams to 180 grams is also a very small improvement.

Also, the design will be unchanged. Though small hardware upgrades will make the Flip 8 a better phone than the Flip 7 on paper, you would be perfectly happy with the latter if you decide to get that instead of the new phone that will come out this month.

And that is where the problem lies.

Samsung feels like it’s done with the Flip

According to some reports, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 might be the last Flip phone from Samsung because the company feels like it has perfected this form factor. Reports from within the supply chain have warned that no designs or plans for a Galaxy Z Flip 9 have come in from Samsung. Normally, when a model is this close to release, the initial plans for its successor start getting sent to suppliers by Samsung.

There is, according to Samsung, no more innovation to be had. Personally, I disagree with that. A Flip phone with no camera cutouts or display crease would be a phone that cannot be improved upon any further, in my opinion.

Also, as long as Samsung keeps refusing to adopt and use silicon-carbon batteries, I don’t think that any Galaxy phone is hitting the potential that it is capable of. Furthermore, some customers really like the Flip phones. Why discontinue something that is guaranteed to keep selling?

Fans of the Galaxy Z Flip series will keep buying new ones as their older phones start showing their age. But when they don’t have any new Flip models to buy, they might just switch to a manufacturer that is still making them.

Also, on a personal note, I think that this decision might be because of Apple. Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to be more like the upcoming foldable iPhone, which is also called the iPhone Ultra.

And if Apple isn’t making a clamshell foldable — because the company apparently also believes that there is nothing new to do with that form — then Samsung might have decided to follow suit.
