AirPods Max still has the big drivers, awesome ANC, and best transparency

And yes, the AirPods Max 2 did just come out in April, with a number of nice-to-have, but not essential upgrades.
Which is why now’s the best time to buy OG AirPods Max
And this is coming from someone who still uses the first edition AirPods Max, released in 2020, with their Lightning port and all. They still work predictably and effortlessly. Put them on — bang, the iPad sound starts coming in through the cans. Play something on the Mac — the sound source instantly jumps over.
And they sound dependably, predictable, politely good across the board. Some audiophiles scoff at them because Apple went the “safe” way, with a V-shaped EQ and a meaty bass. You could say they lack grit, or character, or risk.
But what you can not say is that they sound bad. The frequencies are carefully carved and polished to make sure no matter what genre you play through them, there are no ice picky highs or nasally mids, the sub-bass is well separated so there’s no mud, and the active noise cancelation is still out of this world, while the transparency mode sounds incredibly realistic.

Are there any downsides to getting AirPods Max gen 1 right now?

The Lightning port is pretty much the only con | Image by PhoneArena
The only negative about using the OG AirPods Max in 2026 is that they come with a Lightning port, which is an annoyance in a world that has collectively moved to USB C (even dragging a kicking and screaming Apple along with it).
This also means that if you want to use them with a cable, you will need to track down one of the special Lightning to 3.5mm jack cables that Apple released for those at the time.
Beyond that, as I claimed above — I still use one of these on the regular, and have been over the past 6 years. Can’t complain!
