Apple's new $79 iPhone Duo case requires actual glue to stay on your phone

People are already buying the iPhone Duo official cases ahead of the October 23 delivery date.

If you opt to get a case for your new iPhone Duo gem, you should know that Apple's official $79 case uses glue to stick to the $1,999 phone. The info comes from people who have already picked up the new iPhone Duo case.

iPhone Duo's official case uses adhesive strips to attach to the phone

According to Parker Ortolani, the iPhone Duo case comes in two pieces and attaches to the phone using adhesive strips. The user posted on X a picture of the two iPhone Duo cases he bought and received, with a comment saying that "the case has a nice grippy feel to it, though it has the adhesive stickers like other foldables."

If you decide to buy this version for your iPhone Duo, you will need to peel off the protective film and stick each half of the case onto the foldable, firmly pressing down so the adhesive does its job.

This case is made of polycarbonate and comes in two color options — Sand and Navy Blue. It has a lip around the camera bump to protect it, but it doesn't offer much protection for the inner screen once the device is unfolded.

Apple's iPhone Duo Folio case is the nicer one

There's another iPhone Duo case Apple is selling, also bought by Mr. Ortolani. According to him, it's "clearly the nicer one, and the kickstand feels sturdy," pointing out the metal hinges.

This case doesn't use adhesive strips and instead attaches magnetically to the iPhone Duo. Strangely enough, the Folio case covers the outer display, making the device less practical.  The ‌iPhone Duo‌ Folio is priced at $129, and the ‌iPhone Duo‌ Case is priced at $79. To be honest, the former feels like a massive compromise to me.

iPhone Duo pre-orders are live, but there's a problem

iPhone Duo pre-orders opened yesterday, on October 16, but in just under an hour, the initial batch of devices was gone. The launch-day delivery date of October 23 disappeared, and new orders were moved to a 2027 delivery.

This suggests that all available devices were reserved, probably by scalpers, and you should expect some crazy listings once the October 23 deliveries arrive.

Some eBay listings have already been spotted, with people asking for crazy money ($2,800 to $5,200) for the iPhone Duo, and some promising October 23 ship dates—suggesting these are the initial units that are now completely sold out.

Should you wait until January or pay extra?

I wouldn't recommend buying anything from scalpers, especially at those prices mentioned above. The iPhone Duo is already quite expensive at $1,999, and paying extra doesn't make much sense.

Yes, the stock is gone, and Apple has some production issues, but given the popularity of the iPhone Duo and the demand the model is enjoying, Apple will make sure to manufacture enough units to get the Duo inside everyone's pocket.

Even if the company hikes the price post-launch, the increase will surely be smaller than what those scalpers are asking for. So, arm yourself with patience and wait for January.

There's another silver lining here: early units could be plagued by bugs and launch-day problems, and waiting it out could potentially save you a lot of trouble. I know it's not very comforting, especially when your annoying neighbor flashes his new iPhone Duo under your nose, but that's the situation at the moment.
