I can’t believe I’m saying this, but a Galaxy S27 Ultra with the same 5,000 mAh battery would be better

The Galaxy S27 Ultra might feature a battery capacity higher than 5,000 mAh at last, and that should make me very happy because I am a huge proponent of larger smartphone batteries. In fact, I have criticized Samsung, Apple, and Google countless times for their relatively laughably small batteries in an age where other manufacturers are pushing past 10,000 mAh cells.

But I’m not happy. Because the alternative that Samsung has painted is very painful to accept. After all, it involves a Galaxy S27 Ultra that has lost its soul.

Galaxy S27 Ultra with a 7,000 mAh battery?

I know that it’s almost impossible to believe, but according to one rumor, Samsung has tested prototype Galaxy S27 Ultra models with 7,000 mAh batteries. Apparently, there are five prototype variants that the company is experimenting with at the moment.

The ideal goal is to ship a Galaxy S27 Ultra model with a battery capacity of at least 6,000 mAh. However, if a model with a 7,000 mAh battery has been successfully tested, why not go with that?

Are you willing to give up the S Pen?

According to the leak, the Galaxy S27 Ultra with the 7,000 mAh battery was made possible by removing the S Pen entirely. It might have also been possible if the phone was made a little thicker, but we all know how allergic Samsung is to that idea.

So, if Samsung decides it’s worth it, we could very well see a Galaxy S27 Ultra next year that’s packed with a 7,000 mAh battery. The company has already removed Bluetooth from the S Pen, citing a very low percentage of owners actually using it as the reason. Who’s to say that Samsung won’t do the same for the entire S Pen itself?

Samsung, don’t do this

I have talked before about how it is becoming more and more difficult to recommend Samsung, Google, and Apple phones when they continue to lag so far behind in battery capacity. There’s no other aspect I would rather see improved than the batteries, even over faster processors or newer cameras.

Which is why I’m so conflicted when I say this, don’t do it. Don’t do it, Samsung. Not like this.

Think about it. The S Pen makes the company’s flagship smartphones stand out from the crowd. Every major flagship smartphone on the market has at least one unique aspect. And Samsung needs its phones to stand out now that it keeps making them look more and more like an iPhone.



Removing the S Pen means giving up the last identifying factor of the Ultra models. Especially considering the fact that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will have even rounder edges and, if all of the recent leaks are correct, an iPhone-inspired rear camera island. I would make a case for the Privacy Display but the S26 Ultra’s display has caused too many problems for too many people.

So, as much as it pains me to say this, I would rather have a Galaxy S27 Ultra with a 5,000 mAh battery that’s still a Galaxy and not just an iPhone running One UI.

There is one other possibility

Interestingly, one report has alleged something groundbreaking: Samsung is considering releasing two different Galaxy S27 Ultra models. The difference between the two would apparently just be in their size.

This is something that I’ve seen many customers requesting over the years. While I, personally, wouldn’t go for the smaller model, I know that a lot of you will.
