Wide, non-folding phones are the new rage, according to our poll

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo are the harbingers of the new wide folding form factor. Surprisingly, people are more interested in a new wide non-folding smartphone from the Far East. Huawei launched the Pura X View last week, and the news generated 72 comments and more than 1,000 votes in the poll inside the article.

People want to try this new wide non-folding form factor

Almost half of the thousand voters said they want to try the new form factor. Another 17% voted "It's great! I love my Kindle." The Kindle reference is tied to the specific aspect ratio of the Pura X View, which is almost exactly the same as the original Kindle e-reader.

25% of you guys voted this form factor "uncomfortable to hold"—at least judging from the pictures—and only about 7% said they prefer foldables.

There's no interest in wide flip phones, as just a tad above 4% voted in favor of folding this new wide form factor in half.

The phablet is back!

The phablet form factor could make a surprising comeback. Not because of the Huawei Pura X View per se, but because people seem to love the new wide form factor. The iPhone Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 are two examples, and even though I'm a fan of what Huawei does in terms of innovation, I admit that Samsung and Apple are more influential on a global scale.

That said, the Pura X View is another example of a Chinese brand making a bold move. A lot of the comments on the original article focus on the US ban and whether Huawei deserved it or not, but the fact of the matter is that competition is always good and always pushes tech forward.

Galaxy S27 Wide?

I don't think any of the big three (Apple, Samsung, Google) is going to react straight away. But the possibility of seeing a wide, non-folding model from other brands such as Motorola (owned by Lenovo), Honor, or Xiaomi is substantial.

For me, any change in the status quo is amazing news. I'm tired of seeing the same Galaxy S Ultra phone year after year and miss the era of wild phone form factors. I know that era is long gone and not coming back, but a little variety could spice things up.
