VKWorld Discovery S1 is the first smartphone with a glasses-free 3D display in HD
Remember the HTC EVO 3D, and the LG Optimus 3D (aka the LG Thrill 4G in the U.S.)? Both phones offered users a 3D screen without requiring the use of special glasses. Unfortunately, both 3D phones had less than HD resolution displays. The EVO 3D rocked a 540 x 960 qHD screen and the LG model featured a 480 x 800 WVGA glass.

Now, VKWorld is about to offer the first handset that will bring a 3D image in HD. The VKWorld Discovery S1 will be equipped with a 5.5-inch display that will be protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The 720 x 1280 resolution of the phone results in a pixel density of 267ppi. In addition to providing 3D imagery, the phone will be the first smartphone with a 5.5-inch screen, capable of standing up.

The HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D were interesting, and did provide cool 3D views of certain YouTube videos. They also allowed you to snap 3D photographs using dual-lens cameras (there is no sign of  a dual camera on the Discovery S1). But some reported getting nauseous and dizzy from the display. Still, it has been some years since the HTC and LG models were offered and it should be interesting to see how far the technology has progressed since then.

There is no word yet on when the phone will be released, and we haven't heard any thing about pricing. Stay tuned!
