Turns out Huawei's Kirin 980 may not ship with a custom GPU after all

Specifically, the tipster has stated that reports of a custom GPU are simply rumors generated by the Chinese media. In actual fact, Huawei’s processor will once again make use of the latest high-end GPU by ARM. Speaking of which, the Chinese brand’s next SoC should feature a total of eight ARM-produced Cortex cores. These are set to be four Cortex-A55 ones that will handle simple activities, and another four Cortex-A77 cores that will be clocked at 2.8GHz. Interestingly, though, the latest high-end core from ARM is the Cortex-A76, so it's unclear what the claims of Cortex-A77 ones relate too. In any case, it’s worth noting that the Kirin 980 is expected to be manufactured by TSMC on the new 7nm process, something that should provide improvements to the levels of efficiency and the overall performance when compared to the current Kirin 970.

As of now, Huawei is expected to unveil its next flagship SoC at IFA 2018 in Berlin and it should once again include a big focus on AI. However, with Apple’s A12 chipset set to become official alongside the 2018 iPhone lineup in September, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 also expected to arrive by December, it’ll remain to be seen how Huawei’s offering compares to its rivals once they are announced.
