T-Mobile is playing Russian roulette with its cash grab antics

T-Mobile customers can't stand ads in the T-Life app.

Between recent job cuts and price hikes, T-Mobile has been looking for ways to pad its margins. As if that weren't enough, the carrier is now irking customers by cluttering the T-Life app with ads.

Prime real estate for ads

T-Mobile customer ScorchedWonderer recently posted a screenshot of the T-Life app's Benefits tab, showing a sponsored ad for an HP printer subscription plan taking up one-third of the screen. Just above that was a pitch for the company's credit card.

Since T-Life is a mandatory app for managing accounts and perks, customers aren't happy that the company is turning standard account navigation into ad space.

That's the way it goes

To be fair, almost every app displays ads these days. T-Mobile has included sponsored content in T-Life for a while. It's probably bothering customers more now because the carrier has been making penny-pinching moves and squeezing more money out of them lately.

Striking a balance

Interestingly, right below the HP ad was a $5 gift card. The Benefits tab is where T-Mobile customers go to claim offers, such as the kitchen tongs distributed today.

T-Mobile Tuesdays perks cost money, and it looks like the revenue generated from ad space gets plowed right back into funding those perks. Having ads stare at you when you go to claim offers is a small price to pay for them.

Walking a thin line

Still, T-Mobile is playing Russian roulette. As it transitions into a conventional carrier, customers are less willing to put up with inconveniences. T-Mobile has raised its rates enough to be considered a premium carrier, and customers paying top dollar expect a hassle-free experience.

Further compounding matters, T-Life has been acting up lately. The company has also been accused of selling information harvested through T-Life to third-party companies.

By continually raising rates while degrading the user experience, T-Mobile is already on thin ice, and it might want to tread more carefully before turning its app into a billboard.
