Sales of smartphones with 3D-sensing technology set to top 100 million in 2018

Thanks to strong sales of the iPhone X so far in 2018, and the expected boost the company will see come September with the arrival of its three next-generation models, Apple’s total shipments of smartphones with 3D-sensing technology looks set to reach a considerable 91 million units by the end of the year, equating to over 88% of the total number. For comparison, demonstrating the lack of support for the technology outside of the Apple ecosystem, Android shipments are expected to total just 12 million units, with Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition expected to make up the bulk of sales, although Oppo’s Find X is also expected to generate a portion of the total.
While the sales momentum for Android devices with 3D-sensing support is set to remain pretty slow over the course of this year, shipments are expected to gain pace throughout 2019 thanks to the expected implementation of the tech inside certain Android flagships. Moreover, the arrival of new solutions such as the Time of Flight (TOF) 3D sensing technology is expected to provide a big boost too – Vivo is expected to debut its first flagship with TOF by the end of this year.
Much like the initial introduction of fingerprint scanners to smartphones, Apple’s sales are expected to continue making up the bulk of shipments for the foreseeable future but, as the cost of 3D-sensing solutions begins to decrease, certain cheaper offerings will eventually begin receiving the tech too in the hope of attracting customers and remaining competitive, thus reducing Apple's dominant position.
