Samsung teaser reveals a new phone with the largest battery found on a Galaxy handset
Thanks to accessories like power banks and new features like reverse wireless charging, you might think that consumers would be less obsessed with the size of the battery in their handsets. But judging from our readers' interest in a phone like the Moto G7 Power, a low-priced device with a 5000mAh battery, that is not exactly true. The capacity of flagship batteries has been on the rise and even the iPhone 11 Pro (6.5-inch) is expected to be equipped with a battery weighing in at nearly 4000mAh. That would be the largest capacity battery ever installed on an iPhone. Batteries as large as 10000mAh have been seen packed inside phones from lesser-known companies like Oukitel, but there is a limit to how thick a phone consumers will buy. Earlier this year, a real brick from Energizer with an 18000mAh battery failed to make the cut at Indiegogo.

What brings batteries to mind today is a leaked promo image posted by YouTuber Gaurav Chaudhary (via SamMobile) for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy M30s. The image indicates that Sammy will endow the phone with a massive 6000mAh capacity battery which will be the largest ever found inside a Samsung handset. The revised Galaxy M series is equipped with the manufacturer's Infinity-V displays, which means that they sport a "waterdrop" notch. The already-released Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 are each powered by a 5000mAh battery, so keeping users away from electrical outlets seems to be a hallmark of the Galaxy M line.

The Samsung Galaxy M30s will come with a 25W fast charger

The Galaxy M30s is expected to be equipped with a 6.4-inch display (most likely Super AMOLED) with a 1080 x 2400 resolution. That works out to an aspect ratio of 20:9. While the original Galaxy M30 that launched earlier this year is powered by the Exynos 7904 chipset, there is talk that the new model will have the Exynos 9610 SoC under the hood for a boost in performance. Two configurations will be available, 4GB of memory with 64GB of storage, and 6GB of memory with 128GB of storage. The M30s will reportedly feature a triple camera setup in back with a 48MP primary camera (f/2.0 aperture), an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2 aperture) and a 5MP depth sensor (f/2.2 aperture). In front, there will be a 16MP selfie snapper with an f/2.0 aperture.

Now one of the problems that you might face with such a large battery is the time it takes to charge it back up. The M30s will come with a 25W fast charger to take care of this issue, and the handset will be pre-installed with Android 9. Pricing and availability are unknown, but the fact that Samsung is teasing the battery life of the device would indicate that its unveiling is not terribly far away. Samsung is using its alphabet soup-named low and mid-range models to compete in India with companies like Xiaomi. The latter has been able to use its value for money pricing strategy to capture a big chunk of what remains the second-largest smartphone market in the world. Samsung did the same with its mid-range Galaxy A line. Focused on phones with quality cameras and large batteries, the revamped Galaxy A series launched in March and sold over 5 million units in the first 70 days; this generated more than $1 billion in revenue for the manufacturer.

While Samsung has imported some of its Galaxy A models into the U.S. (the Galaxy A10e, Galaxy A20, and Galaxy A50 are offered by U.S. carriers), it isn't clear whether the Galaxy M series will end up offered in the states. Earlier this year, Samsung said that eventually, it plans a global rollout of the line.
