Samsung Gear VR is official, brings Oculus-powered virtual reality to mobile

Long in the rumors, Samsung's virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, is an offical matter of fact. A result of a "deep and integrated partnership" with Oculus, leader of virtual reality technology developments, the Gear VR is described by Oculus CTO and video game legend John Carmack as "a virtual reality headset with world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform. The headset makes use of the Galaxy Note 4's 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display for mobile visuals, and is built with soft, flexible cushioning and lightweight materials. The goggles will be available in White, with market availability and pricing to be announced shortly.

But what, exactly, do you use this thing for? We can't leave such a fundamental question unanswered, and neither can Samsung, thankfully. Here's the full list of goods the Gear VR will bring into your life at launch:

I just don't see why I would use these VR things on mobile. Can't just walk on the streets wearing one of these lol.

"Can't just walk on the streets wearing one of these..." Maybe you can try sitting down at home when you use your phone next time like when you play a console game.

Then why not get a gaming console instead?

why don't you then? pay £350 (or dollars) to get a console and pay a further 100 to 700 for a phone. besides, you can bring it into a car or airplane.

Exactly what DROID said. I would only wear these at home. At home where I have PC's and gaming consoles. So why the heck would I decide to use it with the inferior mobile device? Makes no sense!

True, but who says you can't connect your Gear VR to your PC? Not sure about consoles as they are more closed and weaker hardware probably wont be able to push enough fps for VR since VR ideally needs much more than 60 fps But there defiantly going to be some way to connect it to your PC, maybe third party if Samsung don't support it There's already Limelight which tricks Nvidia to think your Android is a Shield and allows you to stream PC games to your Android, which could be connect to Gear VR

I never said that I said consoles are weaker PCs And I said that you can stream PC games to Android (there might ways for other mobile OSes as well), i.e. your PC does the processing your Android just displays it So you could connect your Android to the Gear VR and stream PC games from your PC on the Gear VR Or there might be a third party way to directly connect the Gear VR to a PC

Mobile games are gonna have to get a hell of a lot better to be worth it, but I'm pleased about anyone bringing more VR gear to market so kudos to them, and also for making the panels in the Oculus I believe?

I told you you're gonna be the first to be commenting on Samsung's products on the 3rd of September, and I am not surprised. And this is isn't meant to be used while you're walking on the streets. let's see the real innovation that Sony will give us this year with the Z3, I am sure it ll make a lot of us yawn at it. Zzzzzz

Comment #4 and #13. Z3 will at least be premium. And Sony will announce much more stuff like cameras and so on.

"sadly on any product that isn't Sony." Lol. Samsung lovers hate anything but Samsung. Some like Apple. Sony guys like so much more. Nokia, HTC, LG, Chinese brands.

This is what you call innovation!

How is it innovation when Oculus and Sony already have it? SS just made mobile compatible which is stupid because it makes no sense to use VR on mobile...

for portability maybe?

You live in a 600 square meter mansion? Probably not... Also good luck walking with this on around that mansion when you can't see anything...
