Huawei Watch now available in the U.K., offered at £289 ($440 USD) and up
The fashionable Android Wear powered Huawei Watch is now available in the U.K., with prices starting at £289 ($440 USD) and peaking at £599 ($930 USD). While the timepiece will soon be offered on the Google Play Store, it can be bought now from retailers Vmall and Selfridges. The Huawei Watch comes with a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, covered with sapphire crystal, making it resistant to scratches. The display carries a 400 x 400 resolution, and is sized at 42mm.

Powering the Huawei Watch is a Snapdragon 400 chipset, with 512MB of RAM inside. 4GB of native storage is on board, and a 300mAh battery keeps the wheels turning for as long as two days. Bluetooth 4.1LE is supported. Wi-Fi connectivity is available for those times when you can't pair the device to a smartphone. Users can customize the timepiece using black leather, or stainless steel bands.

The Huawei Watch can monitor your heart rate, but the company has opted to make this a watch first and a fancy wrist computer second. Still, it will count your steps, measure the distance that you've walked or run, and will compute the number of calories you've burned during a particular exercise.

I wonder what it is that make smart watches so costly. The internals are fairly modest. The OS is designed by Google and cannot be altered with, so nothing much spent on software development. The only reason I can think of is that, because of the market size which is much much smaller than smart watches, the R & D and marketing costs are much higher per device sold. But I don't think it will be long till Xiaomi, Lenovo and other Chinese brands disrupt the market again with their low cost products.
