Huawei P9 and P9 Plus are official; phones feature dual Leica cameras and Kirin 955 chipset

The journey that started with a small leak in October reached its end today when the Huawei P9 and Huawei P9 Plus were officially unveiled.  No more rumors, this is the real thing. The Huawei P9, which could end up as the manufacturer's first branded flagship headed for the U.S., features a 5.2-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920. Under the hood is the Kirin 955 SoC, which contains four Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The unit will offer expandable memory.

The dual 12MP camera setup (which features flush mounted cameras) includes one camera that takes color pictures, while the other snaps photographs in monochrome. The latter is used for sensing lighting conditions for more accurate shots, and to shoot photos in black and white. Both use Leica optics. Both rear snappers feature a 1.25-micron pixel size and a wide F/2.2 aperture. The front-facing camera weighs in at 8MP.

The phone comes with 3GB RAM/32GB ROM or 4GB RAM/64GB ROM, and features a fingerprint scanner on the back. A 3000mAh battery keeps the lights on and the device sports a USB Type-C port. Stereo speakers are on board and Android 6.0 is pre-installed with Huawei's EMUI 4.1 on top, The Huawei P9 starts at $680 and will launch in selected countries on April 16th.

The phone will be available in Ceramic White, Haze Gold, Rose Gold, Titanium Silver, Mystic Silver and Prestige Gold. At 6.95mm, the P9 is thinner than both the Apple iPhone 6s (7.1mm) and the Samsung Galaxy S7 (7.9mm). Its 1.7mm side bezels are thinner than those on the iPhone 6s (4.29mm) and the Galaxy S7 (3.07mm).

The Huawei P9 Plus is equipped with a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080 x 1920 FHD resolution. The Kirin 955 chipset also drives this model, which will come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable internal memory. Like the P9, the P9 Plus offers a 12MP camera setup on back with the 8MP selfie shooter. A fingerprint scanner is housed under the rear camera, and a 3400mAh juicer keeps the hamster's wheel spinning. Android 6.0 is pre-installed with Huawei's EMUI 4.1 on top. The Huawei P9 Plus will start at $850.

$680 for a phone powered by a punchline of an SoC? Hard pass.

And just to add i was stunned by the amazingly wide aperture (f/1.1) until i went on other websites and see it's just a mistake by the author the actual aperture is f/2.2... http://cdn.gsmarena.com/imgroot/news/16/04/huawei-p9-announced/-728/gsmarena_005.jpg And 850$ for the plus? Unbelievable.

because dual lens structure can change aperture manually

f/1.1 would be disastrous. The lens flare and aberration would have been too high and depth of field too low.

Any phone above the price of GS7 or ip6s is no go for me... Huawei is not a name to pay $850 for, no matter how good they have made P9 plus...

So if have the nerve to critique a company's products or decisions, then suddenly we are bias? Ha, funny. Simple fact is if they want to play in the price range of Apple and Samsung they better bring a product that is as good as their flagships on every level. And if they're going to price their phones above Apple and Samsung, it has to be a better device. Not only that, but they really need a lot of brand power (which they don't have) to pull that off.

they're doing Samsung a huge favor with that price tag, no one in their right 6 would pick the p9 over S7 or the p9 plus over the S7e. I think Huawei went nuts.

Yeah, that price makes HTC 10's €740 justifiable. I mean Nexus 6 Camera, 4GB Ram on base model. QHD Display and the best CPU! Need I say more... Yes, it has the best UI too! I always thought that HTC lost its mojo when the One series was released. But now I think they are on top of their game. Samsung just got a worthy competitor for once.

Their partnership with LEICA is the reason behind those pricing.

because it wasnt much of an event..they didnt even have the actual device for hands-on videos as per GSMarena

Probably because they did not get an invite. That aside, they spent most of their attention to the quality of still images, I just hope they spend equal enough of time with video quality. It probably does not have 4K but if 1080p is great then it can be overlooked. Also how long does it take to charge and how fast to charge from 0 to 60%, since they do not use Qualcomm's standards.

According to live blogs the P9 Plus has fast charging, from 10 minutes of charge you get 6 hours of talk time.

I don't think it has 4K recording because the Mate 8 didn't have it but I could be wrong because the P9 has an updated processor compared to the Mate 8.
