Google rolls out February security patch to Nexus and Pixel devices; factory images and OTA files released

1comment

Google has kicked off the roll-out of the February security update to all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices. Canadian carrier Telus confirmed last week that the security patch would be deployed starting February 6, which suggested Google will release the update as well.

Now the search giant published the Android security bulletin for the month of February, which contains information about the vulnerabilities addressed in this patch.

The Mountain View company states in the announcement that the February security patch was divided into two subsets based on the release date: 2017-02-01 and 2017-02-05. However, they will come as a single OTA update with the February 5, 2017, security patch level.

There are no less than 36 issues addressed in the February security patch, but the most severe is a critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files.

Along with the OTA files, Google also released factory images for the following compatible devices: Pixel XL, Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi), and Nexus 9 (LTE).
