Upcoming Samsung Gear S2 gets teased in a new promo video, the focus is on the circular UI

Roughly a week ago, we got our first official gander at Samsung's upcoming smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2. With a circular display on board and a rather captivating design, the Tizen-powered Gear S2 might easily end up being one of the more enticing wearables Samsung has ever made.

When it was first shown at last week's Unpacked event, we were not quite sure whether the circular bezel around the display will be a navigation ring used to interact with the wearable, but the newest video promo for the device suggest just that.

Bringing forth the "Ready to turn" catchphrase, Samsung's video extensively treats us to the interface of the wearable. With circular icons in tow and an UI that is obviously built around the circular navigation ring, it seems that the Gear S2 could very well try to position itself as one of the main rivals of the Apple Watch.

Some features are also showcased, like the fitness tracking capabilities, several different watchfaces (which might or might not be customizable), chronometer, stopwatch, an S Health app that comes with basic health monitoring features, and a circular app launcher.

While the latest promo video doesn't stress on the design of the wearable, which will probably be featured in another upcoming video, but judging from everything we see, it is made of metal, while the watchbands are most probably made of some kind of rubberized material.

The wearable will become official on September 3 at IFA 2015. What are your impressions of the wearable so far?

No matter what Samsung brings to the tech industry every year and there are people who will always moan about something. Huh

Sorry, sammy, but gear s > gear s2. Bigger battery, bigger screen, more futuristic design thx to the curved screen, it'll also be cheaper than the s2. I don't need a faster processor or more ram cause it's just a watch, not a wrist console. My biggest grievance has to be the design. Sorry, but the s2 looks too ordinadry and feminine. It looks very girly. This isn't what I was expecting. Shame you didn't make a curved watch with edges on both sides. Sammy thinks that people will buy it like crazy because it's round. Also you really make the life for developers a lot harder. Gear 1/2 has a bit different UI, then gear s has also a bit different UI; finally, s2 has a completely different UI. For developers it's like developing an app for 3 different platforms. That's too much hassle. Sammy, turn on thinking. Seriously, your recent decisions regarding both phones and watches makes absolutely no sense.

Yep I was hoping for similar (to gear S) gear S2 with updated processor, more RAM, same screen, wireless charging and round watch as gear A.

I have the Gear S, and it's mostly garbage. It's ugly and slow. The pedometer is a joke. It's really only good for notifications, and even at that, if I clear a notification on my phone, it doesn't clear on the watch. If I clear on the watch but don't delete the email or text, the notification comes back. The apps are terrible and few. Overall, not worth the price.

I wore it for about a month, now it sits on my night stand. The circlular watches look better.

Wow Neros please take that garbage elsewhere. I have the gear s and ill be the first to say im buying the S2 because it looks 1000000000x better . Loved the curved screen on the gear S but dude get real. This is a major step forward if they do it right

Step forward, sure... Yet, apple came up with a rectangular design and it blew away both tizen and android wear put together. Let me guess, you're type of person who thinks that the note 5 is a huge step forward over the predecessor? No, it's the same fail approach as the gear s2. Smaller screen with smaller battery is the better option, lol? What kind of nonsense is that. You'll experience the same problems as the moto 360 had. No support for its 360 degree screen. Tizen watches have few good apps, and since this is a completely new approach, it will have next to 0 fully compatible apps. Hate to say it, but you're acting like an s-sheep/i-sheep/nokia-sheep fanboy. No matter what the company does, it's good cause I'm a fanboy. Samsungvs sales are dropping hard with every year. S6 sales were lower than the s5. Every year they release a completely new watch made from the scratch, meantime apple will improve their watch os and just cash in.

To say that apple came up with a rectangular design and it blew away both tizen and android wear put together. Just shows the world that you know very little. Especially when you used the sheep term and try to apply it to other devices and platforms. Everyone knows the isheep term started with Apple, because you all buy the same I devices, and it is well known that Apple NEVER offers a diverse portfolio of devices. In the entire history of Apple there have only been a total of 10 iPhone models since 2007, with only one price point. High. Samsung releases 10 new phones every quarter. That high price follows through with Apples watch as well.

If you want the least expensive Apple watch it will cost you $400 (mans version), and that comes with a rubberized band and an aluminum case. Yet you think the Gear S2 looks like a cheapo $50 watch, and it has a stainless steel case. So what does that say about the Apple watch sport which is actually made of cheaper materials, but comes with a higher price tag. At least Samsung has a number of different smart watches. This will be their seventh wearable since the first Gear.

You got it all wrong. I root for samsung. I use their products. I actually own their smartwatch. The problem is that sammy is changing their formula every year. Just settle for one ui and improve/develope it. By releasing new watches which differeniate a lot, they make the previous versions absolutely obsolete. So now s2 is the new deal and all rectangular devices will be rendered useless. Sammy is screwing developers over once again.

I think it's great that they are experimenting and changing it around. Smartwatches are still in their infancy and nobody cares if they are changed right now. Manufacturers are trying to find their sweet spot. And why complain about smaller screens? These are not smartphones, they are smartwatches. If you want something big and powerful, just get a strap and put your phone on your wrist.

You sound like a real iSheep. Have you forgotten that you didn't get anything new and innovative in iPhone 6, except a bigger screen and a new design.

Apple came up with a really ugly, feminine design. Every circular smartwatch so far looks better than it.

looks HOT. At least the UI which is the biggest problem of the competing products - let's be honest, android wear looks too hmmmm... lets call it childish?, and apples ui looks just... oh boy I can't even find words to describe that ugly junk...

If they make the housing nice looking as well this could be the first real useable smartwatch.

What I can see in the image is Apple copying the watch that looks similar to few of Samsung's initial version watches.. Why should apple need to make watch at all and go direct copy? Now since gear s2 is circular and looks so different, I hope Apple doesn't copy that one too and try to show the market that they made circular first and everyone copied. Someone copying Apple is all fake which is already understood by many by now..

Apparently you don't know much about history. Tizen (which is the Gear S2 OS) has had circle icons for the past couple of years. I have the Gear S, which released well before the iWatch was even announced, and guess what? It has circular icons.

So, you're right. History has repeated itself - Apple has once again copied a product category, and copied it's look.

Looks pretty good. I used to dislike samsung watches due to the fact that they could only work with samsung phones. I recently got a gear s off craigslist for $150 and I can't even complain now. The battery life is longer than any andriod wear watch I've owned and the curved screen is very nice and vibrant. The only thing I do miss is the google now integration. In the video one of the watch faces had an update on the outer edge of the watch face curving with the screen. That's innovation right there. Not taking up the watch face to display notifications is a pretty good idea. Hopefully they keep the keyboard, replying to text from the watch is clutch. I'll still keep my SW3 but the Gear S2 will look good on my wrist!!
