Liveblog: Nokia annoucnes its 41MP Lumia smartphone
We've waited patiently enough, and now it's finally time to welcome the 41-megapixel Lumia smartphone, the so-called Nokia Lumia 1020! Ever since the introduction of the Nokia 808 PureView at MWC 2012, people have been asking when they will be able to get that innovative camera technology in the far more contemporary package of a Windows Phone device. We'll finally be able to answer this today, as Nokia is expected to unveil the PureView-powered Lumia 1020, hopefully along with a release date.

If you've been looking forward to seeing the Lumia 1020 (aka EOS) announced, you'll surely be glad to know that we'll have an almost fatal dose of coverage as the event unfolds later today. In addition to our first impressions from the 1020, the specs comparisons and so on, you'll also be able to follow the announcement event itself via the liveblog the you can find below, so that you can get the details as they come.

Be sure to return to this post for the start of the presentation, which should begin at about: 11AM ET | 10AM CT | 9AM MT | 8AM PT | 3PM GMT | 5PM CET

Live event tracker

10:53And that's all from us guys, thanks for tuning in, be sure to stay with PhoneArena, as we have a lot of interesting coverage coming up!
10:52Steve offers a lengthy answer that both AT&T and Nokia are doing some hard work, and although they have tough moments, growth is seen daily.
10:51Another member of the press asks what Nokia's doing to make sure that AT&T does well in selling the phone.
10:48A: "We're totally committed to wireless charging, and it's something we're working on." So, progress is being made all the time, we guess.
10:47Q: Why did you choose not to build wireless charging into the device?
10:47The 1020 should hit the US, China and Europe this quarter. More "specific" markets will be blessed a bit later.
10:45
10:44Stephen, however, has an interesting answer. He says that the 1020 introduces the new innovations, but those will scale down to other models
10:44What follows is a question if the 1020 is suitable for emerging market.
10:42The presentation is now over, guys, and it's Q&A time.
10:41Pre-orders will start on July 16, 10 days prior to release date.
10:40Premium price-tag, eh? Fair enough...
10:40"The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be available in retail stores July 26, at 299.99 on contract."
10:39"Today, AT&T sells more Windows Phone than any other carrier."
10:38Ralph doesn't miss the occasion to mention that PCMag recently proclaimed AT&T's LTE network fastest in the US.
10:37Ralph: "This device sets a new standard in that industry for photographers."
10:37AT&T's Ralph de la Vega has joined Stephen on stage to talk up the 1020.
10:36The Lumia 1020 will be available exclusively with AT&T at first. Sometime in the near future.
10:35Nokia's snap-on camera grip will also add a bunch of camera-centric features.
10:35
10:34The Lumia 1020 SDK is available to developers today.
10:34Hipstamatic is building an exclusive app for the Lumia 1020, allowing you to share pics to social networks and... wait for it... Instagram.
10:30Here Maps' Live Sights allows you to see points of interest around you in an augmented reality kind of way.
10:29"The Lumia 1020 offers all the great features expected with all Lumia phones," such as Here Maps, Drive, Music and more!
10:28"Because the Lumia 1020 is built on the Windows Phone 8 platform, you can easily share images."
10:28
10:28The Nokia Lumia 1020 will also feature rich audio recording, as it would have been a shame to couple those beautiful vids with bad audio.
10:27Cool effect!
10:27
10:26Steve will now use a Lumia 1020 placed on a tripod, using a very slow exposure time. 4-sec exposure, to be exact.
10:25You can tweak various things like exposure, white balance, ISO, as well as focus! Yep, there's even manual focus!
10:23A new app, Nokia Pro Camera, will let you take control of all kinds of settings for your photos.
10:23
10:22"You can literally find a needle in a haystack."
10:21Wow, you can take an image, and the zoom... out! in order to see what was around the frame while you were taking the shot. Cool!
10:20
10:19The 1020's gigantic sensor and oversampling tech allow you to use lossless zoom. That's a really cool one, no doubt.
10:17"With this device, we have reinvented zoom. Completely reinvented the concept."
10:17
10:16
10:16The Lumia 1020 will also feature a Xenon flash for much better low-light shots.
10:15Nokia Lumia 1020 is introducing a new generation of optical image stabilization, working both for images and video.
10:14Kristina of Nokia talks up the 1020's ultra-clear video capturing technology.
10:12You'll be able to take 38MP or 34MP images in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, respectively.
10:11The Lumia 1020 will sport a new 41MP backside illuminated sensor. It should be even better than the one of the 808.
10:11Stephen is calling a couple of PhDs from Nokia to explain more about the new PureView technology.
10:09"The Lumia 1020, as you can see, continues Nokia's color story." It'll be available in black, white and yellow unibody design.
10:08"With the Lumia 1020, pictures will mean more to you."
10:08

and a 2012 camera that is unmatched by other smartphones, why not? It is not a 2012 camera when it has 6 lenses (VS 5 on the 808) and OIS built in (absent in the 808). Only the sensor is from the 808 PureView, the rest are not. And, i dont understand the craze over pure hardware and number of cores, even Blackberry and iPhone runs well with duo core.

I kinda wish Nokia takes the N8's 12MP cam and put inside their midrange devices, or non-PureView flagships. More cost effective to recycle the same parts and yet have an above average camera in a phone. Im sure they can get rid of the hump unlike in the N8 (which is because the phone itself is small).

Still owns all the other smartphones. Specs? They depend on the OS, because really, only Android needs quad-cores. Yet people keep complaining how non-Androids have 'low-end' or outdated specs. So, the only differentiating factor (aside from OS) is therefore the camera. This phone is a monster.

Nokia, stop using outdated S4 Plus SoC.
It's the time for a Quad core WP, besides S4 plus only support up to 20MP camera resolution.
The only SoC I know that support camera resolution as high as 41MP is SD800.

the presentation was done very well. they showed all the cool features very well. up til at&t said it will be 299.99 for 2 year contract. that made me cringe. also the girl which was the last question had a good question. she said "what is at&t doing this time to promote the lumia 1020 better than they did with the lumia 920, since for the lumia 920 most of the sales associates didnt even know anything about the phone?" great question.
