While like most people and tech reviewers I'm usually attracted towards higher-tier gadgets and devices, which are normally much more intriguing, it's usually the less flashy devices that end up adorning more wrists and pockets.

Such is the case with the Galaxy Watch 9, Samsung's most basic new smartwatch released in 2026, which lacks the super-large battery or the intriguing features of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 but is actually the wearable I'd recommend to most Galaxy fans.

The reasons are a few, starting with its universally competent design, affordability, and overall abundance of features you'd actually want to use.

Sometimes less is more

Just looking at the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and the Galaxy Watch 9 clearly illustrates my first reason why I'd probably pick the latter if I had to buy a smartwatch today. Sure, the Ultra is as cool as it gets with its rugged and masculine design, 800 mAh battery that offers unprecedented battery life, 100-meter water resistance, and 64 GB of native storage, but… do you actually need all that?

For regular users who'd never dive or don't store a ton of music tracks on their smartwatches, most of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2's spec sheet is overkill.

Starting with the design language, the Galaxy Watch 9 is significantly more universal in the way it looks. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 might not work well for all use cases; for example, I can't imagine wearing it to a dress party or a cocktail as it would be out of place. However, a Galaxy Watch 9 with a classy band could definitely pull it off.

And the ergonomics of it all certainly are in the Watch 9's favor. It's nearly half the weight (31/35 gr vs. 61 gr) and is thinner, making it more comfortable to wear. This rings especially true for folks like me that like wearing their smartwatches while they sleep for that sweet sleep tracking.

Just the right amount of features

And from a features perspective, the Galaxy Watch 9 hits that sweet spot of features and functionalities that most people would use. The Watch Ultra 2 gets you an emergency siren, extra durability, a customizable Action Button, 5000-nit peak brightness, and dive computer capabilities, which are nice quality-of-life features, but most people don't really need any of that.

With the Galaxy Watch 9, the same Wear OS experience and the same health tracking features are available to the user, so the basics are already covered with the entry-level model, which is a definite win.

The Galaxy Watch 9 counters that with a shorter spec sheet, but that’s somehow working in its favor, at least for me.

It shares the Watch Ultra 2's chipset (the Snapdragon Wear Elite is outstanding for performance and efficiency), comes with lower but still more than excellent 3,000-nit peak brightness, and most importantly, gives you options in terms of size and connectivity, whereas with the Ultra 2 you're stuck with a single version.

Stealthily awesome without breaking the budget

And the price is one of the most essential differences.

Starting at $380, the Galaxy Watch 9 is significantly more affordable than the Watch Ultra 2, which to me is the main reason why you should consider it. That's because it already covers at least 90% of the same experience as its more premium peer inus the battery life, making it the one device that ties pretty nicely with the rest of your Galaxy ecosystem.

Affordable does not mean cheap, and the Galaxy Watch 9 proves that easily. It feels like a premium device and the lack of a rugged and more premium exterior or features to brag about does not diminish the merits of this wearable at all.

If you are in the market for an Android smartwatch right now, do consider the Galaxy Watch 9 above anything else.
