Owners of Samsung devices have found themselves locked out of their accounts, and it seems that Gmail is the potential culprit. The dreaded “Account deactivated for security reasons” message has been reported all over Reddit and Samsung's community forums over the past couple of days.

According to the reports on Reddit, the issue started on Monday, and it's not limited to a certain region. Users from the US, Canada, Mexico, and Spain all reported having troubles signing in to their Samsung accounts.
Some users even found themselves forcefully signed out, with the message above appearing when trying to sign back in.
The problem is not trivial, as people can't use their Samsung Find, Samsung Wallet, and Samsung SmartThings features and can't access Samsung phone settings as well.

Gmail alias accounts as potential culprit
Gmail aliases could be causing the issue. | Image by Reddit
There's a theory circulating around the forums, and it involves Gmail as a potential cause of the issue. One user shared a phone conversation with Samsung Support, revealing the reps told him the culprit could be his email, containing a + alias in it.
Another user corroborated the theory by posting an email response from Samsung's support team, acknowledging the Gmail issue and advising the user to "Update the account email address to a unique, valid email address instead of a Google alias email. Delete any alias account that is no longer needed."

Even though a few users were able to get to the bottom of this by persisting and calling the support lines, most of the people haven't been able to get help or even a response from Samsung.
Some people spent hours trying to talk to an actual person on the phone, and not some bot or a prerecorded automatic messaging system. Even when they reached a living and breathing human being, it did not resolve the problem.
The Samsung Community Forum is full of angry messages as well, with people saying they had to create new Samsung accounts just to post their problems on the forum.

Last month, another bizarre story spread through the forums. Galaxy Watch 9 users started reporting charging times much slower than advertised.
The issue was brought to Samsung's knowledge via the official Community Forum, but no viable solution was found at the time.
This time around, we're talking about a problem that can't be resolved by crazy workarounds, and one that's resulting in people being unable to use Samsung's services. We've reached out to Samsung about the issue and will post any updates as soon as we hear back.
