You might not be able to afford them, but Apple's upcoming iPhones are still expected to follow a familiar launch cadence. With report after report claiming price hikes are on the horizon, the excitement around the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra has been slightly clouded. But then again, since when do Apple fans care about a mere $200 extra?
When pressed on when Apple will pull back the curtain on the next iPhones, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested the company is sticking to its usual playbook.
That means a launch on the first Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day. This locks in September 8 as the most likely date, with September 9 the next likely possibility.
After years of observing the same pattern, insiders have successfully deciphered Apple's launch strategy. Revealing the phone in early September allows Apple to build hype for a mid-September release date, boosts fourth-quarter revenue, and gives it time to stock up ahead of the holiday season.
A major flagship launch is always exciting, but this year, AI-induced price hikes have put a damper on everything. Apple has already raised prices on most products except iPhones, and there's chatter that the new lineup might be $200 more expensive than the outgoing generation.
While the iPhone 18 Pro is likely to be a decent upgrade with a 2nm chipset, smaller Dynamic Island, a variable aperture camera, and longer battery life, none of those changes feel groundbreaking enough to justify a $200 or $300 premium.
The iPhone Ultra is expected to be expensive from the get-go, but whether the memory crunch will compound things further and make the device even more expensive than the current crop of foldables is anyone's guess.
The voracious demand from AI companies has created a shortage of memory chips that everyone from gaming to smartphone companies needs.
A September unveiling

With that in mind, the most likely date for the debut of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and foldable iPhone is Sept. 8, with Sept. 9 as the runner-up.

How have price rumors impacted your iPhone 18 Pro or Ultra purchase plans?

The AI tax
The voracious demand from AI companies has created a shortage of memory chips that everyone from gaming to smartphone companies needs.
For smartphone users, the financial hit comes at a time when it's fairly well established that AI isn't going to fundamentally reinvent how we use our smartphones anytime soon. This is especially true for iPhones, which will get features powered by Google’s Gemini models.
