With the iPhone Duo now official, most of us are expected to love it. After all, the smartphone industry has been begging Apple to release a foldable iPhone ever since the concept first took off seven odd years ago.
And, don’t get me wrong, I do like some aspects of this phone. I’m also excited for foldables to become more mainstream now that almighty Apple has entered the market at long last.
But there’s quite a few things that I don’t like about the iPhone Duo. And one of these, in particular, is something that breaks the company’s most sacred rule.
The iPhone Duo provides an inconsistent user experience

Consistency has been the hallmark of Apple’s product lineup. Customization is limited, iOS and other Apple operating systems only exist on the company’s devices, and the Apple ecosystem is often touted as the best one you can be a part of.
The interfacing between your iPhone 18 Pro, your iPad, and your MacBook Air is supposed to be seamless. Even interacting with Apple products belonging to someone else is designed to be fast, easy, and convenient.
The only reason the iPhone Duo even became a reality is because Apple applied its nano-texture coating to a folding display and had a eureka moment. It’s not the exact same coating that you can get on a MacBook, but the end result achieves the same effect.

This was Apple’s best-kept secret for its foldable. Greg “Joz” Joswiak even commented on how they were glad that they managed to keep it hidden even though the passport-style aspect ratio got out.
The coating helps hide the crease incredibly well. Apple was unable to source a display with no crease at all, as it had originally planned, so this was the next best thing. This is also, unfortunately, what ruins the iPhone Duo for me.
When you pick up the iPhone Duo, you are greeted with a stunning external display. Sharp, vibrant, and just what you’ve come to expect from Apple.
Open up the iPhone Duo, however, and everything changes. The colors appear muted, that edge to everything is just gone, and you lose the contrast that made the external screen such a joy to use.
Inconsistency. Within the same device, you are getting two very different experiences. Any content you were watching on the external display will not hold the same polish and sheen when you open up the phone. And if there’s something discouraging you from using the larger display, then what, pray tell, is the point of the iPhone Duo?

Joz and CEO John Ternus said in an interview that the displays on rival foldable flagships were flimsy and felt unpleasant to use. I disagree.
The inner displays on the Galaxy foldables don’t feel like rigid glass but I’ve always found them to be a very pleasant experience regardless. Not to mention the fact that, even without any nano-texture coating, the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is practically non-existent.
The Fold 8 also comes with an anti-reflective coating across its internal display. Unlike Apple’s solution, however, this one doesn’t apply a strong matte finish to everything. Sure, its anti-glare properties are weaker than the iPhone Duo’s, but the screen looks so much nicer without any highly distracting reflections.

I might be a bit biased because I think that the Fold 8 is one of the nicest-looking phones we’ve had in ages, but the iPhone Duo genuinely does provide a very inconsistent viewing experience. And as someone who is very particular about the displays on his phones, that just means that the iPhone Duo gets disqualified before it even gets a chance to prove itself.
