Google's $20 AI plan just got a huge storage jump, and the math is hard to ignore

Legacy Google One subscribers are paying nearly the same for a fraction of the space.

Google just quietly made its $20/month AI Pro plan a whole lot harder to ignore. If you've been coasting on one of the older Google One storage tiers, this might be what finally pushes you to make the switch.

Google AI Pro now comes with 5TB of storage

A Google executive confirmed on X that the AI Pro plan's cloud storage jumped from 2TB to 5TB. The price hasn't changed, still $19.99 per month, so current subscribers just got more than double their storage without paying an extra cent.

The AI Pro plan already bundled Gemini Advanced, AI tools inside Gmail and Docs, and now 5TB of shared storage across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. That's a ton of space for most people. We're talking enough room for hundreds of thousands of photos or years of email without ever stressing about hitting a limit.

The old Google One plans are starting to look outdated

What makes this really interesting is that the legacy Google One storage plans (the ones without AI features) are still around. The Basic tier still offers 100GB for $1.99 per month and the Premium plan gives you 2TB for $9.99 per month, same as they have for years.

So the AI Pro plan, at twice the price of Premium, now delivers 2.5 times the storage plus a full lineup of AI tools. The value gap between those older plans and the AI-powered ones is getting almost laughable. Google clearly wants people to move up, and it's becoming tough to argue with it.

Google is betting big on AI subscriptions

This storage bump isn't generosity. It's calculated. Google has been steadily sweetening the AI plans while leaving the basic tiers untouched for years, and the $250/month AI Ultra plan shows just how hard the company is pushing premium AI access. The legacy plans feel like they exist as an on-ramp now, not a place to stay.

The signal Google is sending is pretty obvious: if you want the company to invest in your experience, you'll need to buy into their AI ecosystem. Whether that sits well with you probably depends on how you feel about AI features being bundled with the cloud storage you actually wanted.

If you're still on a basic plan, it's time to rethink that

I made the jump to AI Pro back when Google offered a free year for Pixel 9 Pro owners, and I haven't looked back. I'll admit, I didn't even realize people were still on the old basic plans until I went and checked the Google One page myself. With 5TB now included, the AI Pro plan has quietly turned into one of the better cloud storage deals out there.

If you're paying $9.99 for 2TB on the legacy Premium plan, an extra $10 per month gets you 5TB plus Gemini working across your inbox, Docs, and beyond. For anyone who lives inside the Google ecosystem, this is a pretty straightforward call. The only people I'd say should hold off are those who truly don't care about AI features and are happy with their current storage situation. But that crowd keeps getting smaller.
