Google just unlocked one of its most popular creative tools for free

It used to take a paid plan, and the new free tier has a line worth knowing.

Google is making personalized image creation in the Gemini app free for eligible users in the U.S., a perk that used to need a paid plan. Whether you are on a Pixel 10 Pro or an iPhone 17 Pro, Gemini now pulls from Google Photos to build images that match your life.

Personalized image creation in Gemini is now free in the U.S.

Google announced the change on its Keyword blog, tying Personal Intelligence to Nano Banana and Google Photos so the app can read your taste and likeness from apps you already use. We covered the feature when it first arrived for Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, and today it opens to everyone who qualifies.

With your permission, it leans on Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search for context, so a prompt as short as "design my dream house" has something to work from. It can also pull real pictures of you from your library, skipping the upload entirely.

How do you feel about Gemini pulling from your Photos and inbox to make images?

What it means if you already use ChatGPT or DALL-E

The key here is context. ChatGPT and DALL-E make great images, but they know nothing about you unless you spell it out, while Google already holds your Search, Photos and inbox and skips that step.

If you mostly create elsewhere, this does not change your tool, and you are missing a shortcut more than a better model. Still, the part Google leans on, knowing pretty much everything about you, is what rivals cannot easily copy.

Who can use it, and what free really covers

A few limits come with the free rollout:

  • You must be 18 or older on a personal Google account
  • It follows the Gemini app's supported countries and languages
  • You need to be signed in to Gemini for any of it to work

This is what free gets you: Nano Banana 2 with 1K downloads, while 2K downloads and the sharper Nano Banana Pro stay behind a Google AI plan, so casual users are fine but heavy creators will likely start to hit limits fast.

A genuinely useful upgrade with a trade worth watching

This is a nice perk for anyone who likes making images but never wanted to pay, and skipping uploads adds up. The ecosystem advantage is doing the heavy lifting, and it is hard to argue with free.

The part I would keep an eye on is what you hand over, since the personalization only works once Gemini can read your Photos, inbox and Search history. It stays opt-in and you can switch it off in settings, which is the right call, and I would love to see Google keep this much in users' hands as it folds more of life into one app.
