This month, the redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will feature a redesigned front camera on their external display. Samsung has managed to make the new cameras smaller than the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but just how much smaller are they really?

In a new report (translated source), a visual comparison of the front cameras of the Fold 7 and Fold 8 makes it very clear that Samsung has managed to achieve something worthy of note. The front cameras on the Fold 8 lineup will be significantly smaller than the front camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Where do you hope this innovation leads the Galaxy foldables?
Smaller cameras for the new foldables
This year, both Samsung and Apple are innovating when it comes to cameras. These smaller cameras on the Fold 8 lineup will very likely make their way to the Galaxy S27 series next year.
Though a smaller punch-hole camera isn’t as exciting as a variable aperture — which is what is reportedly coming to the iPhone 18 Pro — it is a step in the right direction. Eventually, Samsung might make phones with no cutouts across their displays at all, which is what Apple plans to do for the iPhone 20 Pro next year.
Is this better than under-display cameras?

Some users still miss the under-display camera that Samsung used to include in its foldables. The company replaced them with a punch-hole camera for better photography, but whether the trade-off of was worth it is an individual preference.

Still, at least now the external display will have a less distracting and sleeker-looking camera cutout. Nevertheless, perhaps Samsung should be focusing on moving back to under-display cameras instead of smaller ones.
The Fold 7 kickstarted something great

With the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year, Samsung paved way for something great. The Fold 7 is a massive leap ahead of the Fold 6, and it was just the start.
Now, with smaller cameras, even less visible display creases, and a new wide-folding design, the Galaxy foldables are in a better place than they have ever been before. Not to mention the increased battery capacities this year, with the Fold 8 Ultra reported to be shipping with a 5,000 mAh battery.
It feels like the Galaxy Z Fold series is finally moving forward again.
