Galaxy S27 Ultra: Samsung is fixing a problem that made me stay away from the Galaxy S26 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra might be what Galaxy S26 Ultra users wish their phone was today.

The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra will improve upon the Galaxy S26 Ultra in a myriad of ways. Samsung has been introducing excellent new phones and features recently — Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Privacy Display, to start — and will continue this trend into 2027.

Galaxy S27 Ultra will reduce display compromises

With the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung introduced a novel new display technology called Privacy Display. The pixels in the display of the S26 Ultra can be turned on or off in such a way that the screen can appear darkened or completely switched off to people peeking at it from the sides or from above or below the user.

However, the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s display quality suffered because of the Privacy Display. This, according to one industry insider in a Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), is something that Samsung is going to improve.

Better resolution than the Galaxy S26 Ultra

Aside from straining users’ eyes and making them nauseous, the display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra has worse viewing angles than competitors even when the Privacy Display is switched off. In addition, when the Privacy Display feature is turned on, the phone’s display runs at a lower resolution as pixels are actively turned off.

Samsung is apparently addressing these problems as we speak.

Worth the wait

If Samsung delivers, then the Galaxy S27 Ultra will provide a much more pleasant user experience and the display will look sharper and more defined even with Privacy Display switched on. Some users have actually just returned their S26 Ultra because of the display problems.

Should Samsung also manage to improve the viewing angles, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will be a flagship phone worth waiting for instead of getting the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra did not impress me

While the Galaxy S26 Ultra is a fantastic flagship, the issues with its display — as well as its rounder design and archaic-looking camera island — kept me away. Instead, I think that the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the Samsung phone most worth buying this year.

But if the Galaxy S27 Ultra actually manages to fix the display problems that its predecessor has, then it will once again be an Ultra phone worth considering seriously. And I haven’t even mentioned the larger battery (at last!) or the admittedly divisive redesign.
