Exclusive: Yet another price hike will hit some AT&T customers in August

This is far from the carrier's widest and worst price increase of late, but it still looks pretty bad for a significant number of people.

Death, taxes, and regular monthly bill increases for customers of the top wireless and broadband service providers in the US. If it wasn't already abundantly clear that those are the only certain things in life in this day and age, the latest pricing "adjustment" prepared by AT&T to come into effect next month will further reinforce that last part.

How do I know about this fast-approaching change that's all but guaranteed to infuriate some people who probably got one or two other similar reasons of frustration just over the last year or so? From an inside source who's proven their reliability several times in the past. How sure am I that the new info is legit? Pretty sure, given that said source was kind enough to share a number of internal employee training documents that don't look doctored in any way.

Two big categories of AT&T subscribers are impacted this time around

  • AT&T Internet customers on fiber and copper plans established between June 2024 and July 2025;
  • Access from AT&T customers on the $15 per month Copper Plan for speeds up to 50 Mbps (retired in May 2026).

The good news is that probably doesn't cover a very large number of people, at least relative to AT&T's total nationwide customer base. It's also nice to see mobile customers avoided by a price hike for once, but folks who are part of one of the two categories above will need to pay $5 more a month starting August 16 than they currently do, which is the textbook definition of not nice.

To AT&T's credit, at least this price increase doesn't look set to be disguised as a new fee or a modification of an existing tax or fee, which has happened more times than I'd like to remember on multiple carriers in the past.

On the not so bright side of things, the Access from AT&T program was explicitly created to deliver low-cost home internet to low-income individuals and families, so seeing one such plan hiked (especially so soon after its May discontinuation) seems particularly... icky.

What is AT&T instructing its employees to do?

If you've done this type of dance before, you won't be surprised to find out that customer support representatives will... not quite lie to you, but basically claim that these "small" bill "adjustments" are necessary to keep AT&T in business and "maintain the high-quality service you deserve."

Of course, not everyone will agree that their home internet service is of the highest quality, especially if you still rely on outdated copper technology. But if you don't think a different operator will better serve your needs or fit your budget, AT&T can always hook you up with a newer, fancier, and typically even costlier Fiber or Internet Air plan.

My recommendation? Carefully consider all your alternatives before deciding to stick with AT&T, but at the same time, be warned that other carriers will routinely raise your prices as well (with or without advance notice, and with or without proper justification).

How will you know if you're impacted?

If the leaked documents above are legit (and, again, I have no reason to doubt that), you should have already gotten a message in the "News You Can Use" section of your AT&T app or account.

If that's not the case yet, you're probably safe. If you're part of one of the two categories above but don't see a notification alerting you of the August 16, 2026 change, maybe check again in a couple of days.

If this is your second or third monthly bill increase of the last couple of years, perhaps you should take a look at AT&T's competition again. Maybe they'll give you a better deal at least for the short term, and then when they inevitably make you pay more... you can return to AT&T. Unfortunately, that seems to be the only way to keep your wireless and broadband service relatively affordable nowadays.
