Already expected to be expensive, the iPhone Ultra will now cost even more. | Image by Techmong
Initially, Apple had planned to absorb the rising industrywide costs of memory in an attempt to win over more market share, particularly in regions where the iPhone is too expensive for most. Now that Apple is raising prices anyway, the foldable iPhone Ultra and the iPhone 18 Pro are in trouble from the likes of Huawei.

According to a new report (translated source) from a very reliable insider with ties to the supply chain, Huawei has a plan to combat the iPhone 18 series this year. The plan is quite simple, the company isn’t — for now, at least — planning any price hikes for its smartphones.
Huawei’s Pura phones, including the Pura X Max which was made to compete directly with the foldable iPhone Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 8, will also likely not see an increase in price.
Do you think that this strategy will help Huawei win over Apple fans?
Price hikes for the iPhone
The rising memory costs have proven too much to handle for Apple, so the company has recently announced price hikes for many of its products. Some of these hikes are massive jumps over the previous prices, and the consumer base is not happy.
The iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Ultra coming out this year are reportedly getting a lot more expensive as well. Previously said to cost over $2,000, the foldable iPhone is now going to launch with a jaw-dropping price tag attached to it.

A win for Huawei, but maybe only in China

Of course, Huawei phones don’t really sell that well across the globe anymore due to not running on Android or being allowed to use Google’s services. However, the company’s homegrown HarmonyOS is a fantastic operating system and Huawei has continued to see exponential growth back home.
For consumers that are also considering a Huawei phone this year, the choice will become pretty obvious once Apple announces the prices of its upcoming flagship smartphones. And back in China, even diehard iPhone fans might have to rethink their loyalties this year.
Well, that didn’t work out as planned
Other manufacturers, if capable of doing so, might follow in Huawei's footsteps. | Image by Huawei
Personally, I find it quite funny that the tactic that Apple wanted to use might now instead be used by a major rival instead. I’m also surprised that Huawei is considering not raising prices for now, considering the state that the industry is in.
But hey, if it manages to do so, then it deserves to win over some additional market share, in my opinion. I wonder if any other smartphone manufacturers are able to refrain from raising prices for now as well.
