Apple Watch is testing the one health feature Oura owners swear by

Apple wants your wrist to stop clocking out at bedtime, and the sensor change behind it is already in testing.

Apple Watch heart rate tracking may soon run all day, instead of checking in at intervals and only going constant while you work out. Apple is testing that change alongside a Fitness and Health app revamp built around the wellness metrics Whoop and Oura are known for, and while nothing is confirmed for the Apple Watch Series 12, it would change how much the best Apple Watch you can buy knows about you in a day.

Apple is testing an always-on heart rate sensor


Bloomberg's lead Apple reporter Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, says Apple has a feature in testing that lets the heart rate sensor collect data continuously through the day. It would take the approach the watch currently reserves for workouts and simply leave it running.

Gurman also reports that Apple is revamping its fitness and health app software to show more wellness-related metrics, in the style of the increasingly popular Whoop and Oura apps. He has the most reliable track record of anyone covering Apple's roadmap, though it should be noted that both of these are described as in testing, with no release window attached.



So neither one is promised for the Series 12 or the Apple Watch Ultra 4 next month, especially since Gurman has already said this year's watches are fairly minor upgrades.

Why an always-on sensor matters more than it sounds


The gap here is how often the sensor checks in, rather than how well it reads. The Apple Watch is already strong on heart rate accuracy, it just takes spot readings, which leaves holes in resting heart rate and heart rate variability trends that only fill in properly when the sensor runs constantly.

Running it all day means a real baseline, so an odd resting rate on a Tuesday afternoon finally has something to be odd against. The cost is battery, on a watch our Apple Watch Series 11 review already described as a daily charger, so I'm assuming Apple has spent this long testing because that math is genuinely hard.

I came across a thread in the Oura subreddit that shows the exact gap Apple is trying to close. The original poster asked how everyone splits their health data between the two devices, and the replies were remarkably consistent.



One commenter takes the ring off during workouts because Oura's heart rate readings were throwing the numbers off, then takes the watch off at bedtime and lets the ring carry the night.

The thread is a couple of months old, so it is not a reaction to this report, and a single thread is anecdotal. Still, that division of labor comes up constantly among people who wear both, and continuous sensing is aimed right at it.

Whoop and Oura did not win these people over on sensor quality. We covered how Whoop cleared a regulatory shortcut that Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch spent years fighting for, and the Oura Ring 5 arrived leaning into blood pressure patterns and long-term signals rather than workout stats.

Their pitch has always been the always-on baseline and the readable story built on top of it. So if you wear an Oura Ring or a Whoop band, this doesn't affect you, since there is no release date attached to any of it.

Even so, the piece of Apple's offer that used to be missing is the piece now in testing. A watch that runs its sensor all day and presents the results in a wellness-style app is a far more direct rival than one that wakes up for a run.

Who actually gains from all-day tracking


The biggest winners would be people already wearing the watch around the clock, since they would get denser trend data without changing a thing about their routine. Sleep tracking on the Apple Watch would finally have daytime context sitting behind it.

If you charge overnight and sleep without the watch, continuous daytime sampling still sharpens your resting numbers. However, the overnight half of the picture stays with whatever else is on your finger or wrist.

The version of this I already live with


I noticed the difference when I moved to a Pixel Watch, which reads my heart rate continuously by default. The trend line is genuinely useful, and I caught a stretch of elevated resting heart rate before I felt run down, which is the sort of thing occasional spot readings miss entirely.

The tradeoff is real though, since that sensor is part of why I charge daily. I'd personally love to see Apple ship this with the battery side worked out first, because an always-on baseline you switch off by Thursday to survive a trip is not much of a baseline.
