Report: Apple iPad mini 2 and 5th-generation Apple iPad to launch in March
Brian White, an analyst with Topeka Capital Markets, is not a stranger to these pages, and the latest information he has received from his supplier sources suggests (alliteration alert!) that the Apple iPad mini 2 and the fifth-generation Apple iPad will be both launched in March, only five months after the introduction of the current models.

The sources tell White that the fifth iteration of Apple's 9.7 inch tablet will be faster and lighter than the current model. It will have the same design as the third-generation Apple iPad but will feature the faster A6X processor and the new lightning port. As for the Apple iPad mini 2, the new version is expected to have the same form factor with perhaps a faster processor inside. Despite previous talk of a Retina display for the Apple iPad mini 2, there was no word about the resolution of the screen for the sequel to Apple's 7.9 inch tablet.

White once again said that Apple will release a new Apple iPhone in the May-June timeframe, earlier than in the past two years. Consumers will have a variety of colors and sizes to choose from, said the analyst.

I remember when the ipad 3 came out and only included a bumped up processor and a retina display. Was a hard choice for customers to really see the difference between the ipad 2 and 3 looking at the displays. For a difference in price of $100-a lot of ipad 2's are still being sold today because noone wants to pony up the extra $100 for retina. Then came out ipad 4 which included everthing on the 3 with a bumped up processor and a lighting connector for the ipad 4. Now a rumor is about a ipad 5. Point is--the ipad mini will follow the same cycle of the ipad---which will have you still buying the ipad mini 1 because it will be $100 dollars cheaper than the ipad mini 2 which will only include a retina display or a bumped up processor--but not both at one time--then their would be no need for a ipad mini 3, 4 or 5.. doesn't matter though--the fans will still be out there buying them because it's something new--when actually the mini is light years behind the nexus 7 in performance, processor, speed, and features.

at the rate apple is producing no one will be buying. There is only that much money to spend in a certain period

Well I can tell you I'm not very happy to hear of this. I have an iPad 4 and its really fast and the games run amazing on it BUT if its not going to be the top dog only after mere months

Even samsung that has new product every other month keep their flagship model on a 12 months refresh cycle.

I'm seeing how it might be harder for developers to make great games in numbers like they do now. I'm no lover of IOS but my iPad is pretty fast when loading web pages or playing games.. I won't be buying this next one though

Barely two months since the iPad mini and 4th iPad, and they're ALREADY coming out with their successors? At least Samsung gives about six months to a year in between their devices, with Apple's stuff, it's pretty much obsolete in a couple of weeks. If this is Apple's way of strengthening their fan base, their fans must have plenty of disposable income to be throwing down hundreds of dollars for a barely-changing device at least once a year.

"The sources tell White that the fifth iteration of Apple's 9.7 inch tablet will be faster and lighter than the current model. Or is the 5th gen iPad REALLY going to be just an iPad 4 that's thinner and lighter?

competition is heating forcing apple to change it's schedule in releasing new products. not only is samsung their main headache but those small phone and tablet maker most people never heard of but are churning out cheaper phones and tablet.

I think they should really beef up the specs of the mini, get it on the same level as the ipad 5 but in a smaller package. If you look at the pricepoint thats what you're paying for, thats what you should get.

They're probably going to overclock it to 1.5 or 1.6GHz.

Looks like they have increased those production schedules. I think the competition is the reason.

Apple is doing their absolute best to obsolete the previous generations of phones and iPads. I wonder how customers who purchased a Mini and the 4th gen iPad feel about being obsoleted before a year has passed?

Look how mad those who bought an ipad 3 were when the 4 came out and now this shortly after? Apple is losing their luster and this isn't the way to gain it back.

Let em keep on keeping on. They're losing customers and market share daily, so i for one approve of apples strategy to keep re-releasing the same damn thing every few months and passing it off as new.

I for one love constant refreshes, but im probably an exception to the norm. I know not everyone wants this but i wish galaxy s series was more like this. I like getting new gadgets. I love opening up a new box and turning on a new device for the 1st time. I hate only doing this once a year. Id be happy with a 6mnth cycle as long as it didnt mean manufacturers were holding back tech just so they could do incremental upgrades to squeeze money from consumers.

They will put retina in mini v3. Funny how fast they are pumping iPads out I mean the 4th ipad just came out and now another one? Seems like the 4 was a waste and can see some angry apple product buyers if this holds true. So much for the one product a year they used to try and bash android about.

Over on Macrumors, the buzz is that retina will be on the Mini2. It makes sense for the Mini2 to get a retina display and a mild bump in CPU/GPU (to maybe the A5X).
