Legal problems could delay German launch of HTC Magic
We recently reported that Vodafone was planning an April launch of the Android based handset, the HTC Magic. That date might be in a bit of peril because of a dispute between the cellphone manufacturer and IPCom over some patents relating to UMTS. In a Mannheim court last month, a ruling was made that some type of infringement is occurring which means that either HTC and IPCom work out their differences or else the manufacturer stops production on the phone. Faced with a choice like that, it seems that the former would be the likely decision and the result will probably add some cash into the coffers of IPCcom, a company that manages a portfolio of patents and has a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against Nokia pending for violation of the same patents involved with HTC. Will the manufacturer's second smartphone based on Android make it into consumers' hands by April? With this dispute clouding the picture, it might require some hocus-pocus.
