LG Optimus S finally receives its long awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

LG Optimus S finally receives its long awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update
When it was first released last fall, one of the nice things about owning the LG Optimus S was the fact that it came with Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box – and in fact, it was one of the few at the time to sport that version. Fast forward to almost a year later, the handset is finally moving up to the next version of Android.

Sprint announced the beloved news that many handset owners have been waiting for, which is none other than the fact that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the handset is being rolled out. However, they’re releasing it in droves over the course of the next 10 days – so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see that notification today.

As always, the new software update features the usual suspect of enhancements that tend to come with major updates, a refreshed user interface, the addition of a new multi-touch keyboard, dedicated power management app, task killer app, and an updated camera app. In addition, it addresses a couple of annoying problems relating to the phone’s volume control and 3-way calling.

Of course, it was a long time in the making, but nevertheless, LG Optimus S owners have plenty to look forward to as they’re finally getting the Gingerbread treatment.

The phone is a great entry level smart phone. Check out all the reviews on all the sites the phone is actually surprising. Of course there are better phones but that doesn't mean it's crap.

do you have to have the phone running on a sprint serivce because i cancelled mine. but still use it on wifi. will i get the update?

I have this phone without Sprint service, and I got the update this morning, but now I can`t connect to wifi, so the phone is useless now :( I`ve been searching all day and I couldn`t find any clue of what is happening with my phone!!! so, if you didn`t have the update so far, when it prompts with the message: There`s a System Update, click on learn more, and then pull out the battery so the download process stops!!

This is a good low cost phone. And I say about time, I was just thinking about rooting it, thinking LG and Sprint forgot about us Optimus users since the last mention of this was back in February.

what are you trying to say about women??? are they not capable of using bigger high-end phones?

No that's not the point I'm making. The point I was making was that many women and teenager alike, aren't into having the huge screened bulky phones. Granted many are now moving to that because they realize that they get better features and more use out of them. However, there is still that niche of women that want the small form factored device that can do everything or almost thus why alot of ladies go for an iPhone because they are simple and small.

Wow my 10yr old daughter has this phone and really likes it. I have the EPIC and its still running 2.2, thank you Sprint for letting her pass me up. Maybe I will downgrade and get 2.3! What a joke!

Not sprint or LGs fault that Samsung is notorious for being slow to update their phones.

I got this update last week and my phone has problem with the dialer function since then on top of that I had swype beta but as soon as I updated my keyboard downgraded and I can't get my beta version of swype installed. I'm now looking to root the phone out of 2.3. The update is garbage.
