Final Huawei Mate X to be lighter but possibly feature a smaller battery
The foldable Huawei Mate X made its debut back in February and was expected to launch in June. But in light of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold issues, the company chose to delay the Mate X’s release until September in order to make some changes. Now, with just over a month left to go, what is allegedly the device’s final spec sheet has leaked.
As Huawei first announced earlier this year, the final version of the Mate X is expected to feature a large 8-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2480 x 2200p. When folded, this will shrink down to a 6.6-inch display that boasts a tall 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The overall dimensions of the foldable are expected to remain at 161.3 x 146.2 x 5.4mm too, but it seems the final version of the phone will be around 8g lighter than first expected with a total weight of 287g.
The lightness of the final Mate X model can be attributed to the adjustments made internally. Specifically, while Huawei has reportedly maintained the Kirin 980 and compatible 5G modem, it has seemingly decreased the battery capacity by 100mAh to 4,400mAh. This could, however, simply be the rated capacity which is often slightly lower than the official capacity. Regardless, support for the same 55W SuperCharge tech is expected.
Other changes to the premium foldable appear to focus on the internal storage configurations. The smartphone was previously expected to feature 512GB of storage and 8GB of RAM as standard but it now seems as though Huawei is also preparing 6/128GB, 8/256GB, and 12/512GB variants. In all cases, support for nano-SIM cards of up to 256GB is to expected.
It’s unclear at this stage whether Huawei has plans to release all storage configurations globally, but the 8/512GB model will retail at €2299 ($2579) in Europe when it goes on sale later this year. Huawei itself hasn’t yet specified an exact release date but more information will probably be announced at IFA 2019 in early September.
