Apple could soon ditch LCD displays in favour of all-OLED iPhone series

Since the iPhone X’s introduction in 2017, Apple has become increasingly dependent on OLED displays for its latest devices and, as revealed by a new report by The Wall Street Journal, the Cupertino-based giant could go all-in with the tech in 2020.

According to today’s information, Apple supplier Japan Display is currently preparing a detailed contingency plan for when this happens. This would involve two new investors taking a combined stake of 30% in the manufacturer and greater control, something that would greatly help it navigate its way through the future without Apple’s business.

As things stand, LCD panels for iPhones account for around half of Japan Display’s revenue. Previously the company did announce plans to start manufacturing OLED panels sometime this year but Apple is yet to place any orders for these. In fact, the Silicon Valley company currently relies on both Samsung and LG for these panels.

As well as using OLED displays across the board, 2020 is set to be the year in which Apple does away with its controversial notch in favor of both punch holes and in-display technology. In addition to this, the lineup is rumored to integrate 5G support for the first time with the help of an Intel modem. However, it currently remains unclear if 5G will be reserved for the two most expensive models.

One final possibility for 2020 includes the introduction of Apple’s first foldable smartphone. A number of patents have previously revealed that Apple is toying with the idea, while a Samsung executive recently suggested its rival was working on a device too. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee this will happen and Apple could either scrap such a device entirely or choose to release it at a later date.
