Major Sony Xperia Z Ultra firmware update brings support for the mobile X-Reality engine, adds new features
A new 14.1.B.510 major firmware update for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra (C6802) has started rolling out in the Asia-Pacific region, and it brings along some overdue goodies. Among these are support for Sony's highly touted mobile X-Reality engine, which promises to increase the overall playback quality of locally-stored media, such as photos and movies, by adjusting the levels of sharpness, saturation, contrast, noise-reduction and even reproduction of lacking pixels. The rest of the reported improvements and new features include:
Overall performance increase and improvements in battery life
New stock widgets – Clock, Alarm Clock and Calculator among others
Multiple small apps can now be opened at once
Refreshed design as far as the messenger and e-mail apps are concerned
Superior Auto mode added to the camera appearance
One-handed text input now possible
Background UI has gone white-grey
The update measures at 770MB, and you'll need to use Sony's PC Companion suite to download and flash it.

I agree. Obviously this built is the one that will debut in the forthcoming Xperia Z1 too and it was meant for the Z Ultra too, but Sony rushed the Z Ultra in order not to have these models presented too close to each other. This means that the Z Ultra debuted with half-baked firmware. Not so nice.

It was mainly an issue with their 2012 range and some of their 2011 phones.
