Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini leaks online with entry-level specs

Judging on three distinct leaks that have recently surfaced online, Samsung is working on an entry-level smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini. From the looks of it, the handset will be similar in terms of hardware specs to the original Samsung Galaxy J1, launched by the manufacturer in February this year.

A leaked benchmark result for a Samsung smartphone with model number SM-J105F was recently spotted in the GFXBench database. The original Galaxy J1 came with model number SM-J100F, hinting that this new phone is a related device, a thing that can also be noticed by comparing the specs.

The specs listed by GFXBench include a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels, a Spreadtrum SC8830 SoC with a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of integrated storage space. In the imaging department, the Samsung SM-J105F is listed with a 5MP primary camera and a VGA shooter on the front, and the handset runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Now, you can certainly notice that most of these specs are near identical with those of the original Samsung Galaxy J1. A couple of distinct leaks, however, indicate that this is not a tricked GFXBench result listing a fake model number, but a new Samsung smartphone instead.

Zauba, an online import/export tracker, lists the same Samsung smartphone (SM-J105F) being imported in India for testing purposes. The import tracker contradicts the GFXBench result when it comes to the size of the display, listing a 4-inch screen instead of 4.3-inch one. Given that GFXBench is known for erroneously reporting display sizes, however, we're willing to trust the Zauba listing in this aspect.

Last but not least, code found on Spreadtrum's website confirms that the SM-J105 is a real device and indicates that the phone will actually be called the Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini:

Given the entry-level specs of the Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini, expect to see the handset selling for about $100 unlocked. Like the original Galaxy J1, the Mini variant might be specifically targeted at developing markets where low-cost smartphones are in high-demand.
