With major events like IFA in Berlin in just a week, and various phone reveals and launches coming up in late 2026, I know for a fact that I have some traveling ahead of me. Trips that often come out of nowhere, leave me little time to prepare.

Yet, the nature of the trips still demands I have stable and predictable connectivity, so I can share info, files, and pictures with the team back home.

No, I don’t keep a roaming plan always active on my account. Why would I? When eSIM services like Airalo make it super-easy to pay a very fair price for the exact amount of roaming data or service time you are going to need.

Set it and forget it. When you are back from your trip — it’s all gone, and there’s no need to worry about it.

What Airalo offers in a nutshell

  • Choose your data package — all-out Unlimited or a humble 1 GB
  • Choose how long you will need the plan from (3 days to 30 days)
  • Local, regional, and global roaming options
  • eSIM, data-only plans (some locations include voice and text)

Airalo fully utilizes eSIM tech, which makes it super-easy to set up a roaming service, even if you are doing it last-minute, literally at the airport. I’ve done that more than once, not because I am unorganized or anything.

Why data-only? It’s quick, easy, and you can do everything with data nowadays. Including voice calls. Plus, it’s the most important thing to have when abroad — so that you can download maps, routes, and restaurant locations.

Airalo maintains partnerships with at least two carriers for each destination (where possible), so you are not tied to one single network, and will be able to get the best possible coverage for your location and circumstance.

Unlimited data eSIM - my go-to choice

When abroad, I usually need lots of data. Yes, on one hand I need to share files. On the other, by day 3, I have the urge to just binge YouTube and tune everything out for a bit.

And YouTube videos have become large, you know? I can literally burn through a 3 GB limit in a day.

So, I can either opt for a more expensive 10 GB plan and hope it’s enough, or just get an Unlimited eSIM and put it in the “one less thing to worry about” folder.

Airalo does offer Unlimited data eSIM plans for roaming. You only pick the amount of days you are going to need it for.

Installation and activation is easy

The Airalo app has a one-button setup for your eSIM and the entire process is pretty painless. For anything that gives you trouble, you can find easy step-by-step instructions in the app or on the Airalo website itself.

It is recommended that you are connected to your own secure Wi-Fi during the installation process. I know I made a remark about doing it lat-minute, at the airport earlier, but I only do so through a private hotspot.

If you want your Airalo eSIM data plan to start automatically when you land, you can simply “turn on” the eSIM before your flight even leaves. Your purchased plan will begin ticking down only once you land at your destination and Airalo connects to a partner networkn for the first time.

Warning! If you pick a Regional plan and you are currently in a country that’s part of that region, don’t activate roaming yet! The Airalo eSIM will connect and activate, since it assumes you’ve reached the location you need it for.

Can I use a hotspot with my Airalo data eSIM?

Yes, Airalo does not put limitations on hotspot use. Whatever data plan you have for your phone, you can share it with your laptop, the kid’s tablet, the colleague’s phone.

Note that some carriers in some countries may restrict hotspot use, but that’s out of Airalo’s control.

Airalo is also pretty transparent about its speed caps. Unlimited plans will surf at 20 Mbps for the first 3 GB per day. After the 3 GB threshold, they are throttled down to 1 Mbps as per the Fair Use Policy. The limit resets on the next day.

Fixed-data plans have no speed limits.

Is my phone compatible with Airalo?

Airalo utilizes eSIM since it’s the fastest and most painless way to get a new plan on your phone without having to deal with major switchups or waiting for a physical SIM to come in the mail.

Most modern smartphones made in the last 6-ish years support eSIM. It’s easy to check if yours does — just look for an eSIM toggle in your connections or mobile data settings.

Secondly, your phone should not be carrier locked, as that will most probably block you from installing an Airalo eSIM entirely.

So, in short — your phone should be from this decade and unlocked. Still, if you need to be 100% sure, use Airalo’s handy-dandy eSIM compatibility checker.
