Spotify added the one playlist feature that hits you right in the nostalgia

Spotify has started rolling out User Notes, which lets you attach a short written note to individual songs inside a playlist. It is available on both free and Premium accounts, so it works on a Galaxy S26 Ultra just as well as on an iPhone, though only in select markets for now and only if you are 16 or older.

Spotify is letting you write a note on every song

Once a song sits in a playlist you made or added tracks to, you can open the three-dot menu next to it and leave a note about why it is there, where you first heard it or anything else you want attached to it. Spotify describes the notes as personal captions, and each one appears directly beneath the track name.

It should be noted that these notes are not private. According to a new report, anyone who can see the playlist can read your notes, and your name links back to your profile. Spotify did not publish a newsroom post for this one, confirming it in a statement instead, which is a little odd given it did publish a full write-up for Running Mode, the fitness feature it announced the same day.

Apple Music and YouTube Music still have nothing like this

For once, this is not Spotify catching up to anyone. Neither Apple Music nor YouTube Music lets you annotate individual tracks, so if you use either of those, nothing changes for you today and you are not missing out on some standard feature everyone else has.

What stands out to me is how long people asked for this one. Spotify's own Community Idea Exchange has threads requesting per-song notes going back years, describing this exact use case, remembering which show a song came from or which trip it belongs to.

Who this one actually matters to

If you make playlists for other people, this is the thing you have been working around for years by stuffing context into the playlist description. Now that context can sit with the song it belongs to.

A small feature that says something about where Spotify is heading

I like this one more than I expected to. Most of what Spotify has shipped recently has been about the app doing the work for you, generating playlists and picking tracks on your behalf, so a feature that hands you a text box and then gets out of the way is a nice change of pace.

The select-markets caveat is the frustrating part, of course, because Spotify has not said which markets are covered or when everyone else gets it. If it does reach my account, I will probably start with the playlists I have shared with friends over the years, since half of those songs have a story behind them that nobody but me remembers. I would love to see private notes as an option down the line, though.
