The first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo, has finally arrived, and it looks a lot like the rumors and leaks suggested. However, Apple may have taken an extra step into ensuring the user experience and durability of the device, thanks to an over-engineered combination of hinge and display.
iPhone Duo has an internal display like no other foldable
During the “Surprise and shine” event this morning, Apple had a full segment dedicated to the internal display of the iPhone Duo. Saying it aimed to deliver the best possible experience, the company has focused on how it looks, how it feels, and how long it will last.
The three things that Apple thought people don’t like about foldable displays are the crease, the plastic feel, and how easy they get scratched and dented. To address these issues, the company developed what it calls a nano-texture finish, which gives a matte effect and reduces glares and reflections.
This texture also serves to create a “perceptually flat” surface, which feels better to touch. If you want to know just how seriously Apple has taken the idea of making the iPhone Duo internal display as flat as possible, there’s a separate part of the process that sounds like an advanced plastering.

On the durability side, Apple uses a custom polymer for a nano-textured cover layer that it says is 40% stiffer than other materials used in the industry. There’s also a scratch-resistant coating, both of which protect the surface of the display.

Then there’s the structure, which has high-strength glass sitting above and below the OLED panel, as well as a titanium layer on the bottom, providing further durability. If this reminds you of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it may be because it all sounds similar to Samsung’s Flex Titanium tech.
However, Apple also uses custom viscoelastic adhesives that allow the different layers of the display to glide relative to one another like the pages of a book. This further helps the materials to keep their integrity as it relieves them from some of the stress when everything bends.
An over-engineered hinge may be what makes the iPhone Duo special

If there’s one thing that’s more over the top than the display, it must be the hinge of the iPhone Duo. The goal with it was to secure precise and smooth opening and closing, but also to support the center of the display. To achieve this, the company used over 100 tiny components, delivering on the satisfying feeling.

Early first impressions from the device suggest that Apple achieved the user experience part. What remains to be seen is how this design will affect the durability. The company said it uses AI algorithms to match individual hinges with the housings where they’d fit best, ensuring perfect alignment and, hopefully, higher durability.
This design fits inside a grade 5 titanium body and a 3D-printed hinge cover. The front display is covered by Ceramic Shield 2, which is 3x more scratch resistant than the previous generation, while the back has a Ceramic Shield cover. The device is splash-, water-, and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating, outperforming the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but matching the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
Better than the competition, at least on paper

We’re yet to put the iPhone Duo to a hands-on test, but so far it looks like Apple outdid all of its competitors. Even the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is one of the greatest foldable smartphones ever released, lacks some basic things the Duo has, including a hinge that can stay partially open.
Devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and Honor Magic V6 feel unpolished in comparison, even if they may provide “more” on paper. Of course, Apple could base all its design and user experience on about seven years of innovation and iteration done by its competitors, making its job easier.
While I can’t dismiss the fact that the two foldables I’ve been intrigued by are the iPhone Duo and Samsung’s preemptive answer to it, I’d hold my excitement until we can see if Apple can deliver on its promises. If that’s the case, we may be looking at a new chapter for smartphones.
