This crackling or popping noise apparently comes from the earpiece, and it affects both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The issue manifests itself during app use, web browsing, notifications, or typing on the keyboard, but some users say they hear it all the time.
You can trigger the bug by turning Airplane Mode on and off or dragging the brightness slider fast between its minimum and maximum settings.

Apple rolled out an update yesterday to fix another iPhone 18 Pro bug, where some phones automatically restart when Face ID fails. iOS 20.0.1 seems to have fixed that particular issue, but there's no word on the audio bug.
For what it's worth, the update could've triggered the issue, and there's no word from Apple about a fix or a workaround.
