The iPad is finally adopting a design that Samsung tablets have had for years and I’ve always been puzzled by

Apple's upcoming iPad might finally catch up to its Galaxy Tab rivals in one key design aspect.

Modern iPad models have continued a design trend that I have always been puzzled by. A design choice that, in my opinion, the Samsung tablets do a lot better than the Apple tablets.

This is finally changing, according to a new report. Which means that the upcoming iPad models should look a lot more modern all of a sudden.

Narrower bezels for the new iPad models

According to a new report (translated source), upcoming iPad models will be getting significantly slimmer bezels around the screen. If you’ve ever put an iPad next to its competition, like the Galaxy Tab S11 series, you’ve probably noticed how dated the iPad looks in comparison.

This is apparently finally changing. In addition, of course, to better processors and possibly more RAM as well as a slight improvement in thermal management.

Apple has been sticking with much thicker bezels

For some reason, this is an area where Apple has been lagging significantly behind in with the iPad. Some have argued that this is to reduce the chances of touching the display with your palm during use, but other tablets with narrower bezels seem to be doing just fine. In addition, some users have novel ideas on how to solve this issue.

The modern iPad Pro models are stunningly pretty, in my opinion, but the bezels are a very noticeable sore point, especially when you put the tablets next to their Galaxy rivals.

A change that might get you to upgrade

Other than the shift to OLED displays, modern iPad models haven’t really shipped with noticeable external changes that would get the average consumer to upgrade. Faster processing speeds and Apple Intelligence are nice and all, but many — most, I would argue — customers don’t care about these things enough to get a new iPad.

Slimmer bezels might finally be that change that drives more iPad sales again. The category has hardly been suffering, if we’re being honest, but the iPad hasn’t seen an explosive sales boom like the iPhone and MacBook lines have had recently, either.

It would be enough to sway me

I’ve recently started caring about how a device looks a lot more than I used to. I was almost ready to jump ship to the Apple ecosystem, just to daily drive something different, but the gorgeous lavender Galaxy Z Fold 8 stopped me.

If I was picking between last generation’s iPad models and these upcoming newer ones, I think that the bezels alone would have sold me on the latter. Just like how I wouldn’t buy an iPad without an OLED display now that that is an option.
