The iPhone Duo is right around the corner, and Apple is making sure it won't repeat the biggest Android foldable mistakes. The company is ensuring the iPhone Duo will launch flawlessly by giving developers a heads-up to create and optimize their apps for the new foldable.

Apple has published detailed guidelines for developers on its official blog. There are three steps to make sure apps are compatible and work flawlessly on the new iPhone Duo hardware.
Step one suggests recompiling any existing apps with Xcode 27.1 to make them compatible with the iPhone Duo. The software offers visualization and other useful tools to show exactly how the app will look and behave on the iPhone Duo.

Step two involves App Store product assets — screenshots and preview specs — necessary to publish the app. And step three is the submission of the app itself. Apple is already accepting iPhone Duo-optimized apps and games starting today.
From April 2027 onward, any apps submitted to the App Store will need to support the iPhone Duo and include screenshots to show how they will look on Apple's new foldable.

Avoiding the biggest launch-day mistake

One of the biggest launch-day problems Android foldables have always suffered from is app compatibility. Apps natively developed for these devices look and feel great, but third-party apps are almost always broken on day one of the launch.

This has been a major issue for foldables on the Google Play Store, but it's tied to the more open nature of the Android ecosystem.
Apple has always been the king of software optimization, which has been one of the key ingredients of the iPhone's success over the years. With the iPhone Duo, the company has a unique chance to avoid the usual day-one software nightmare most Android foldables face and make the iPhone Duo feel even more polished and market-ready.
There are still question marks around the hardware side of things and potential issues with the screen or the hinge. Rumor has it that Apple faced difficulties in both areas during production, and problems could occur in retail units as well. Fingers crossed the phone is rock-solid, though, as the price — especially for the higher storage variants — is eye-watering.

iPhone Duo pre-orders and availability

iPhone Duo pre-orders will go live on October 16, about a week from now. Actual deliveries are expected to start October 23, so there's not much time left for developers to optimize their apps for the iPhone Duo.
There were initial rumors about delays, but it seems Apple has tackled those, as the pre-order and market availability dates remain unchanged at the moment.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB version and goes all the way up to a whopping $3,199 for the 2TB storage variant.
Another potential win for the iPhone Duo
I was very skeptical about the iPhone Duo initially. Even after the official unveiling on September 9, the specs and overall presentation felt lackluster.
But over the course of the last couple of weeks, I've grown positive about the iPhone Duo's success. It seems Apple has cracked the foldable code. First, the replaceable cover on the inner, flexible screen — a feature no other foldable has.
And now, this latest push for apps optimized for the Duo. Even at $1,999, this foldable will most likely be a huge success for Apple. Initial feedback has been extremely positive, and I expect iPhone Duo pre-orders to be strong.
