The Galaxy A series is Samsung's best-selling smartphone lineup, period. That's why I've been waiting for the Galaxy A58 with excitement and hope. However, the latest leak about Samsung's upper midranger leaves me disappointed.
No upgrades to the Galaxy A58 camera system

According to the Dutch site Galaxy Club (pretty reliable track record), the Galaxy A58 will retain the camera system of its predecessor. This means the phone will come equipped with the same 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 5MP macro snapper as the Galaxy A57, and that's a bit disappointing.
My colleague Vic deemed the camera system of the Galaxy A57 "average" in his review, and I was waiting for a camera upgrade in the next generation. Because, other than the camera, the Galaxy A5x lineup has always been great bang for the buck.
Decent main camera, but what's with the macro lens?

I admit, the main 50MP 1/1.56-inch sensor is not that bad and pretty close to the flagship main cameras of the vanilla S26. However, Samsung has been slapping a macro sensor on its midrange phones for years now, and I can't see a reason why.
Most ultrawide cameras can take pretty decent macro shots, and a simple 3x telephoto would've made the Galaxy A58 a pretty solid choice.
The only reason I can think of is that Samsung doesn't want to cannibalize the Galaxy S26 FE series, as the A58 would've come too close to the budget flagship, camera-wise.

The Galaxy A38 might be the better choice
The Galaxy A38 might be the better choice, given the upcoming price hikes. | Image by SamMobileSamsung's Galaxy A18 isn't out yet, but it already feels too familiar
Given that the Galaxy A38 will feature the same camera system as the A58, according to the leaks, the cheaper model might be the better option for people who are looking for the best price-to-performance ratio.
The phone is expected to ship with a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 5MP macro lens, alongside a 12MP selfie camera. We still don't know if the sensors and lenses are going to be the exact same ones used in the Galaxy A58, but the specs look identical when it comes to megapixel count.

Galaxy A58 specs and the upcoming price hikes
Samsung hiked the prices of the Galaxy A series recently, but more price hikes are expected next year. | Image by Samsung
The tech world is still in crisis mode when it comes to RAM and memory modules. Everything is backordered for big AI data centers, and even big companies such as Apple and Samsung are struggling to source components for their phones.
The situation is quite bad—Samsung has its own memory division, but nevertheless, the company is struggling to manufacture chips for its own phones. There are price hikes expected next year, and they will most likely affect midrange phones as well, not just flagships.
The latest leaks and rumors suggest that the Galaxy A58 could start as high as $799 in the US, and even the most optimistic suggestions point toward a price tag of around $649. That's flagship territory!
In terms of specs, the Galaxy A58 is expected to mimic its predecessor, more or less. The camera system will be the same, the 6.7-inch display will also be similar (if not identical), and the 5,000 mAh battery is also expected to be carried over from the A57.
The only expected upgrade is the chipset. Samsung usually slaps Exynos silicon in the Galaxy A series, and I expect the Galaxy A58 to get the Exynos 1780, the next generation following the 1680 found in the A57.
Should you wait for the Galaxy A58, or maybe downgrade and get the A38 instead? It's too early to say, but with the upcoming price hikes and chip shortages, the best possible option might be to wait and hold on to your current phone.
