Samsung's new Bixby assistant might not be based on Viv Labs technology

Samsung's Galaxy S8 flagship is said to host a plethora of innovative features. There have been a lot of rumors about the device, many of them revolving around Bixby – the new AI assistant that is said to be a major selling point of the upcoming smartphone.

A lot of reports have also surfaced, but some of them have been very contradicting. In November, Injong Rhee, Samsung's mobile division chief technology officer stated that Bixby would significantly differentiate from other voice assistants thanks to a new technology from Viv Labs - a company which has several members that used to work on Siri.

However, the latest information from Wall Street Journal suggests that Bixby will largely rely on an upgraded version of Samsung's own S Voice software, which has never been a consumer favorite due to its limited functionality. By comparison, Viv Labs' own Viv assistant has been quite formidable – demos have shown that it is fast, reliable and capable of handling complex requests containing numerous sentences.

As Samsung bought Viv Labs, some of the software is bound to end up being integrated with Bixby, but as of now, we can't really know how much. The most reliable source of information will come with the unveiling of the Galaxy S8, which will reportedly happen at the end of March.
