Samsung's new Bixby assistant might not be based on Viv Labs technology

Samsung's Galaxy S8 flagship is said to host a plethora of innovative features. There have been a lot of rumors about the device, many of them revolving around Bixby – the new AI assistant that is said to be a major selling point of the upcoming smartphone.

A lot of reports have also surfaced, but some of them have been very contradicting. In November, Injong Rhee, Samsung's mobile division chief technology officer stated that Bixby would significantly differentiate from other voice assistants thanks to a new technology from Viv Labs - a company which has several members that used to work on Siri.

However, the latest information from Wall Street Journal suggests that Bixby will largely rely on an upgraded version of Samsung's own S Voice software, which has never been a consumer favorite due to its limited functionality. By comparison, Viv Labs' own Viv assistant has been quite formidable – demos have shown that it is fast, reliable and capable of handling complex requests containing numerous sentences.

As Samsung bought Viv Labs, some of the software is bound to end up being integrated with Bixby, but as of now, we can't really know how much. The most reliable source of information will come with the unveiling of the Galaxy S8, which will reportedly happen at the end of March.

I hope it does turn out better the S voice. But I guess to me it really doesn't matter because I am one that does not like talking to my phone. I might once in a while in my house but not in public

S-Voice isn't terrible, its just slow. But the results when you finally get them are very accurate in comparison to Siri, Google and Cortana.

why would you want him quit tweeting? wouldn't you love that the president and every other government official was more open and transparent.

His tweeting doesn't make him anymore open and transparent.......I didn't like him tweeting out against the 9th Circuit judges..... I didn't like it when Obama criticized judges and I do not like it now

Too many conflicting rumors for a phone that hasn't even gone into mass production yet. Samsung might as well go with the Google Assistant. Either way, AI is the new 3D TV. Cool for demos, but in terms of real world use, just not that interesting.

This close to release and may be base on S voice software. That's why I say be patient and wait for official news. Like the oddly place finger print scanner that everyone is upset about.

The head of mobile and software R&D at Samsung, Injong Rhee has already pronounced about the new Samsung AI, he said would feature “significantly differentiated” capabilities from its competitors, that the Assistant will be able to learn and adapt to their usage habits over time. i don’t belive that the Bixby is only a S-voice update, if it was, there would be no reason to rename it and add a dedicated button
