Samsung names Lee Sang-chul new smartphone marketing chief as unveiling of new flagship draws near
With less than a month remaining before the Samsung Galaxy S6 is introduced at MWC, Samsung has introduced Lee Sang-chul as its new smartphone marketing chief. That means that Sang-chul will be immediately tossed into the roaring flames of a major press event on March 1st, at MWC 2015 in Barcelona. Samsung just sent out invitations for the event during which the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to be unveiled. A curved design on the invite confirms that a model with curved glass over one or both sides is expected.
Formerly the chief of Samsung's Russian operations, Sang-Chul's new title is head of strategic marketing for the mobile business. His predecessor, Kim Seok-pil, left due to health reasons and might return to work in the future. Besides handling the press at the big event in Barcelona, the new marketing chief also has to deal with Samsung's currently struggling mobile business.
A 64% plunge in mobile earnings during the fourth quarter, combined with Apple's strong showing during the same period, has made the release of the Samsung Galaxy S6 the most important new mobile product release for the company in a long time. Samsung supposedly started over from scratch in designing its new flagship phone, and the company faces tough competition from flagship models due out soon from its rivals including the HTC One (M9) and the LG G4.
