Pei: Aggressive invitation rollout for OnePlus 2 coming next weekend

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei sent out a tweet on Wednesday, apologizing for the one-month delay in rolling out invitations for the OnePlus 2. But Pei made it clear that "an aggressive invite rollout" will start next weekend. That would include Friday, September 4th; Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th. As you probably know by now, OnePlus employs the invitation system to better match up demand with supply. Because the company sells its phones nearly at cost, it cannot afford to build a large number of units on spec.

The first invitations are going out to major participants in the OnePlus social media community, and winners of various contests. Those who visited one of the temporary Pop-up stores will also be ahead of the line. OnePlus 2 buyers receive a certain number of invites with their purchase, which they can send out to anyone that they know. After all of these people receive their invitations, the more than 3 million people who registered with OnePlus for an invite will start to receive one.


Last year, more than one million OnePlus One handsets were sold. Pei and crew originally expected to sell just 50,000 to 100,000 units. This year, the company says it might sell anywhere between three and five million phones.
